This year is the big holiday in Russia. This year we celebrate 60th
anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War. This war is also
known as the World War 2. The war which brought away 27-28 millions of
lifes of soviet people and millions of lifes of different nations of
europeans still an important issue of modern life and relationships
between countries. We pay honors to all veterans who fought German
nazism and sorrow all the victims. But on the other hand we are
proud of our grandparents who fought on the battlefields and worked
for the victory far away behind the front lines. We say them thanks
for defeating Motherland and liberating European countries from
Nazism. We will never forget our soldiers who never returned home from
europe and paid their lives for freedom of the countries they
liberated.
I expect you might have different opinions on this issue. Thus I expect
you to help me. I am writing an article about the war and would like to
learn what modern europeans think about this now so far the time
bringing us far away from the real events of thos days. Would you
please take your time and answer some of the questions below.
Please, share your opinion.Thank you very much.
1. Soviet Union played the main roll in the victory over nazis Germany.
2. Soviet Union paid the highest price for the victory in this war.
3. Communist party was the main power in USSR able to organise people
and resources to put them together to strike Hitler.
4. Thanks leadership of Stalin and the communist party our country
was able to go through the troubles of the war and bring freedom to
other nations of europe.
5. If not the USSR western allies would never be able to win Germany.
6. Country you're from and your age.
Thanks once again. |

2.you're right
3.you're right
4.Bring freedom to other nations ? Are you serious ? Let s say that to polish, chek, hungarian, and baltic people.
5.Disagree, russian played a big role but allied forces had the most powerful industry (mainly from USA that s ok) and they had the absolute weapon : the atomic bomb.
6.it is not your business |

>>1. Soviet Union played the main roll in the victory over nazis Germany.
True. Subject to the caveat that the USSR played a joint roll in starting the war in the first place by invading Poland on Sept. 17th 1939 as agreed with the Soviets Nazi allies.
>>2. Soviet Union paid the highest price for the victory in this war.
True in terms of absolute numbers killed but in terms of the proportion of the population then the Poles paid a higher price.
>>3. Communist party was the main power in USSR able to organise >>people and resources to put them together to strike Hitler.
Since the Communist party had spent 22 years exterminating all alternatives to itself it is self evident that it was the only organising force left.
>>4. Thanks leadership of Stalin and the communist party our country
>>was able to go through the troubles of the war and bring freedom to

You can't be serious!! Try telling the Balts, the Poles, Czechs, Hungarians et. al. that WW2 brought 'freedom'. The war brought freedom to western Europe and soviet occupation to eastern Europe. As for Stalin, he was responsible for the decapitation of the Red Army prior to the war thus fatally compromising it's ability to defend the USSR when the Nazis turned on their erstwhile allies. The 'leadership of Stalin' brought the USSR closer to defeat than any action of the Nazis could have done.
>>5. If not the USSR western allies would never be able to win Germany.
No. The Manhattan project would still have progressed at the same rate and Nazi Germany was nowhere near being able to replicate it. Also, Operation Sealion was a physical impossibility which would never have succeeded. The UK would have held out against the Nazis until 1945 at which point an atomic bomb dropped on Berlin would have ended the war in exactly the same way that such actions forced the Japanese to surrender.

1. a mayor role, i'd say. the war would have lasted a lot longer if hitler hadn't gotten himself into a 2-fronts war. he could have done this for instance by attacking britain at an earlier stage than he did, to prevent the british from building up their war industry. that probably would have decided war on the western front and might have kept the north american intervention out of the european part of WW2
2. they paid a very high price, but they also emerged as one of the biggest winners.
3. yes. obvious
4. liberation from the nazi's would be more accurate and a little bit more neutral. see eryk's post
5. see question 1 as well.. would the usa have been in the war if hitler had caught britain? i doubt.
6. haha..
i'm born long long after the war in a country that managed to fight nazi germany for 4 glorious days before surrendering
ohh and please give the last tzars their 15 minutes of fame too... much of the soviet ability to move their war industries into and beyond the ural mountains depended on 'their' transsiberian railroad |

1.Obviously, we fought against 3/4 of Hitlers army while the Western front foguth 1/4 and mostly poorly equipped. And we freed much many countries than anyone else. Finland,Lithuania,Latvia,Estonia,Poland,Ukraine,Austria,Half Western Russia,Germany...and some others i forgot...
2.Obviously
3. Correct.
4. True, just look at East and West Germany at the end of the war, west germans fleed to the east because it was the only one with gas, electricity etc etc etc. Everyone is happy the Red Army freed them, the only ones that are not are few baltic nazis.
5.True

Poorly equipped ?
* Let me remind you the last big attack of the German Army took place in the Ardennes using Koenig tiger tanks which was the most powerful tank of WWII.
* The best plane (I mean the fastest and best armed plane) the Messerschit262 was only used in the west front and driven by the best pilots because the Germans were thinking Allied pilots were much much better than russians.
*U boots fleet were only used in the Atlanltic against Allied forces.
Allied forces didn't get stones on their heads during WWII |

1. Soviet Union played the main roll in the victory over nazis Germany.
A major role yes, main role, no. The defeat of Nazi Germany was a collaborative effort between the Allied powers and the incompetence of the Nazis including Hitler himself.
2. Soviet Union paid the highest price for the victory in this war.
Yes...true....but in population proportion, Poland paid the highest price. Half of the Polish people were exterminated and Warsaw was reduced to rubble and ash.
3. Communist party was the main power in USSR able to organise people and resources to put them together to strike Hitler.
Yes....but...The Communist party was the only power
4. Thanks leadership of Stalin and the communist party our country
was able to go through the troubles of the war and bring freedom to

Yes this is true for the first part, but I disagree with the second part. The Soviet Union did not bring freedom to Eastern Europe. Any Pole, Latvian, or Czech whom all bitterly hate Russians because of the experience would tell you it wasn't freedom that Russia brought.
5. If not the USSR western allies would never be able to win Germany.
Answer is the same as the first question, it was a collaborative effort which was helped by Hitler's & Mussolini's incompetence.
6. Country you're from and your age.

soviet: | Quote: | | the Great Patriotic War. | this name for the second world war sounds a bit 'over-patriotic' to me. is this a common name to give this war?
friday i saw a photo-exhibition on the war in The Hague's city hall, sponsored by the russian consulate in the netherlands. impressive. there were some pretty good photo's among them.
also there was this broadcast yesterday on tv about the dynamo kiev team that played the german's during occupation and won 5-3. all of the players were deported after the match into a concentration camp. only 2 of them survived the war.
A son of one of the interviewed survivor's mentioned that initially Soviet propaganda had claimed all of the players were executed immediately after the match and he wasn't believed back at school mentioning his dad was still alive. The 2 survivors were ignored for years by media, not a nice way to treat some of your more symbolic heroes of the war..
some other atrocities of german occupation forces were mentioned, among which the murder on 30.000 people, driven together in a small valley.
it makes it quite clear for me why 9th of may is such a big day in russia still, much more than in my country. |

1. The Soviet nation was the main nation.
2. Agreed.
3. The Communist party was the only party in the USSR. (Wish it were still) The Communist party thru it's international connections mobilized opposition to the Axis as no other organization ever has.
4. Stalin was just one individual member of the Communist party. He had weaknesses and strengths. Communists from many countries deserve credit. (Including Nordic Women of leftist roots from the 'Red Fin' region of the US who volunteered for espionage to go to Berlin be whores to the German Generals) Russian collaborators were just as bad as all the other Quislings.
I am personally grateful that Hitler and the Axis were crushed. Those who whine about lost national freedoms can rot by me. The US is today plagued by all the collaborators which were allowed to emigrate.
5. The western allies would not have have had the will to win; whether they could have won eventually is too hypothetical to answer.
6. USA, 57 Check out this US song from the era. Stalin wasn't Stallin http://www.umkc.edu/lib/spec-col/ww2/Dday/rams/2c/stalin.ram |

1. Soviet Union played the main roll in the victory over nazis Germany.
Bolchevics didn t choose to war nazis, they collaborated with them. How can you call this war "patriotic" while USSR is not a nation. Had bolcheviks chosen to fight nazis in 1939, the war would have been way shorter. Russians were still providing raw materials to germans one day before they got attacked.
2. Soviet Union paid the highest price for the victory in this war.
Statistially yes. With modern weapons, efficient strategy and regard for individual lives, the toll would have been way lower.
3. Communist party was the main power in USSR able to organise people
and resources to put them together to strike Hitler.
The same one that signed a treatee of non agression with nazis?
4. Thanks leadership of Stalin and the communist party our country

Freedom to annex half of europe or freedom to kill or deport local populations? Which country are you talking about? I can t see any country called USSR on a global map.
5. If not the USSR western allies would never be able to win Germany.
If USSR declared war to nazis in 1939 and didn t provide nazis with raw material they were lacking, millions of lives would have been spared, including russian ones. |
