|

Hello!
There is 4 of us (all students) doing the transsiberian railway this september, and we re thinking of dropping off in Tayshet, as it has been recommended to us. Here's my question: Is it really a place worth making a stop to see some "genuine Siberia"? And furthermore, seeing there is a lot of information about accomodation in all kinds of places on this site: Can anyone (perhaps from the waytorussia.net team) give me some advice on accomodation in Tayshet? Is there hotels, hostels, or any russian families that might be willing to take me? Any help is greatly appreciated!
Cheers and thanks!

Not Tashkent, Tayshet actually, at the intersection between the Transsiberian Railway and the BAM. Anyone knows any tips for hotels or hostels there or any other sort of accomodation?
Thanks!

Schlendrian,
Apart from what you aleady know, even the trans-sib railway guide reckons it's a place best avoided as it's another non-descript industrial town that was a former gulag transit point. I would say you would be far, far better off in Irkutsk. At least you can go to Lake Baikal etc etc.
Enjoy

The hotels in Taishet haven't been renovated since Soviet period so do not expect anything you're used to - it's not cosy though with toilet/shower in the room (I wouldn't use this shower though - if you need pics - PM me and I'll send) but very cheap. We paid something about 300 rubles (or 200? ) per person per night. No breakfast included. The nearest cafe doesn't offer breakfasts either. But it could be a nice experience Maybe you'd better to stay in motels... they can be better. At least from time to time drivers stay there. They offer breakfasts and the food is quite nice there. I don't know if local people host tourists - I don't think there are many tourists there. You can try to find somebody to host you
But it's really nothing to do there... I've been there working with a guy from Peking Express... and I wouldn't come back |

well, not really... there are a couple of old rissian wooden houses and churches there - so you can see them... but you can find much more of them in bigger places - as Irkutsk, for instance |
