A 13 year old girl -- her father was killed during a war. Her mother beaten, raped and hung by drunken enemy soldiers. Her twin brother and grand father executed. She stayed at a concentration camp for 3 months. Her distant relative living in Russia adopted her.

She grew up getting beaten up almost every day at her school. When she was 18, she was detained by a police. At the station, she was raped multiple times and beaten to near death and taken to a hospital. Due to this rape, she has a child. She applied for a political asylum and now she lives in New York.

Now, she is only 24 years old. Yes, she is a Chechen girl.

Now, close your eyes and imagine this young girl being a 13 year old Russian or an American girl.

She is a tenant at one of the buildings I own.

I know this is not a popular topic. But is this a common fate for many young Chechen girls?

Appalling. Tragic. Heartbreaking. What can we say?

Is this common for Chechen girls? One would hope not. Chechnya is a disaster area and a war zone. Sanity and decency are suspended. In an atmosphere like that many human civilities are suspended and the meanest prevail. Remember Yugoslavia.

Whatever you can do to help this person, I implore you to do. If she can manage to resurrect a decent life after all that abuse, she will need all the help she can get. Bless you for being concerned. Be glad you're in America.

Expat,

She applied to NYU to get her college education. First four years in America, she spent time learning English while working as a paralegal. She wants to go to NYU and eventually go to a law school to become a human right's lawyer working for UN.

I am doing my best to make sure that she gets into NYU (I was a former professor and I have many friends who are professors).

I tell this story to people whenever I hear about people blaming their mistakes/misfortune on their broken home, growing up poor, etc.

Good for you. We cannot fix all the worlds' problems, sometimes we can only effect that which we see from our own kitchen windows. You are in a position to offer assistance to this woman. I applaud you for caring and doing something about it. Kindness is its' own reward. She certainly deserves to be cared for. Keep being concerned about our fellow human beings and this world will be a better place for all of us.

Kudos and thanks.

Well, it is not common with Chechen girls, no doubt about that. Life in Chechnya still is not back to normal, but much better compared to 5 years ago when it was a war zone. The refugees are slowly coming back there from the neighbouring regions.

Life can be very cruel and unfair as in this young woman's life. If she is able to become a human rightsa lawyer, that is perhaps one way to make some sense out of all of the misery she has endured. Thank God she has some support like yourself. I agree that acts of kindness and encouragement, support are very meaningful, often much more so than we anticipate. Perhaps all of us on WTR should practice more kindness here. Serious. Like managing to say something positive about someone who we migh have or have had issues with for what ever reason. Smile

Not too common, but she is one of the fortunate ones. In the past and somewhat to an extent now, Chechen women are being exploted left and right. A favorite is to recruit (read: kidnap) and brainwash them to be suicide bombers against Russia. The last 4 major Chechen terrorist attacks in Russia all involved women.

Listen I am russian and all I can say is that forced unions are the worst, if i was in their situation I would do the same terrorist attacks.
One is the way USSR dealt with it, giving it them more Independence, autonomy etc...the other is Putins mafia way of mass murdering,so until we stop mass murdering i dont see any reason why they should stop their attacks.

Renwan.
Seriously are you saying that you would rape women, terrorize and kill? Renwan your politics are warped. It's intereszting how some cling to ideology. Why not try and think independently?

Cyndy, I think that you misread Renwan's post a bit. Even though he is a Russian he was saying that the Russians are treating the Chechens so badly that Chechen terrorism is understandable. I think that there are evil men on both sides who are profiting from the continual war.

The rebels are probably getting support from wealthy Moslems, and they are responsible for horrible acts of terrorism, including suicide bombing. The local Russian forces are, from what I've heard and read, kidnapping, murdering and extorting money from the local population.

We could look at Beslan, and say that anything Russians do to Chechens is justified. Renwan looks at the Russian treatment of Chechnya, and says that their terrorist response is justified. However, I don't think that evil ever justifies evil.

Vic, who is a Putin supporter, says that things are getting better in Chechnya. I really hope that this is so. However, it is in Putin's interest to say that things are improving in Chechnya, and I believe that he has been saying this for quite a while.

My neighbours are Chechen. They left in 1993. They have ralatives there and they go back to see them every now and then. They say that it has gotten better.
