Just read in Kommersant newspaper today how the police busted a pirate DVD factory outside of Moscow. They claim it was the biggest in Russia producing more than a million fake DVDs every day (every 2nd they say). It was located on some abandoned factory in a small town in Moscow region (how's that for a movie Smile ) and inside all the ruins there was a modern production run by 20 people on 3 state-of-the-art machines producing DVDs. The funny thing is that the newspaper says that one of the previous directors of the company who owned this underground DVD factory used to be the main guy in Russia responsible for fighting with intellectual property violations... Well, that's what makes Russia so unusual -- stories like these... And the funny thing is that you can still go to Gorbushka trading center in Moscow and buy any DVD you want for $5. They even make double-sided ones one, with two movies on one...

I work on a cruise ship, and when my ship docked in St. Petersburg, crewmembers took busses downtown to look for three things: souvenirs, CDs and DVDs and bars. The cost savings was amazing, and I never heard anyone complain about the quality of the items they bought. I mean, guys would go and buy 20-40 CDs/DVDs at a time!

Of course it was great to be able to buy so much music at those prices. But it was unfortunate that most crew didn't see a lot of the other things that make St. P. so special and historic. Some of us took the metro around, saw some of the stations, went to places away from the tourist areas and really saw more interesting sights that way.

Does anyone really care much about pirating?

Hello again,

I just reread my comments, and I really have to rephrase my response because it can be read differently than I meant it. I wanted to say, do Russian people care enough about pirating CD/DVDs that there is a push for enforement on a big scale? Or do they just enjoy the low prices? I hope nobody took my comment the wrong way.

This summer there was a front page article on the NYTimes about piracy in Russia, the title was something like "Hollywood Competing with Moscow's Streets".

One more reason to visit Russia.

Russians just enjoy the low prices, they think Hollywood filmmakers and record labels have enough money and don't want to support them.
