| Yeah, you're looking at 800-1000 rubles from official taxis into the center and a ticket to St. Pete is about 500-700 rubles. It's not 10 hours, though. More like 7 or 8. And there's an express now that does it in, like, 4 or 5. |

| Yeah, taxis from the airport are ridiculously overpriced. If you don't have too much luggage take the bus to the metro and the metro to leningradskii vokzal. $2 total. |

They are, but only the ones that stand around the arrival gates and pester you "Taxi, taxi ? Taxi ne nuzhno ?" I've heard them ask for as much as $80 before, if they think you're dumb enough to know better.
Short of public transport, which is definitely the cheapest but frequently over-crowded and inconvenient if you have baggage, I'd say your best bet is to either:
1. Arrange a cab beforehand with a non-airport cab company. I use 232-1111. They'll meet you and hold a sign. If you get a Russian-made car, it will cost about 800 rubles. Foreign make is 1000.
2. Go upstairs to the departure level. There are lots of 'gypsy cabs' making the trip back into the center and you might be able to stop one of them for a few hundred, depedending on where you're going.
Cheers,

| thank you for the advice, I think I will arrange for a cab ahead of time to the center, as I have a few hours to kill until my train leaves in the late evening. My next problem is what to do with my bag all day since I am not getting a hotel!!!! This is a first for me, coming into Moscow and then going straight to Saint Petes........usually I stay a night or two, any more advice??? I could use it!!! |

While I have never used one myself, all train stations have a "kamera hranyeniya" where you can store things for a few hours (or overnight) if need be. I don't remember where it is at the Leningradsky Vokzal (the station you'll be leaving from for St. Pete), but once you're there, someone should be able to tell you, or you should see signs.
The cost is marginal, I've never heard of security problems, and in terms of leaving it somewhere near the station, you can't get any better.
Maybe someone else here has used the kamera hranyeniya at Leningradsky and can tell you exactly where it is.
Hope that helps,

one of those clowns stopped me once and asked me if i need a ride. i said yes. he said 150 dollars. i thought i heard 150 ruble. im still new to moscow, so im thinking, wow 150 rubles, thats cheap. this whole convo was in english. so i start going with him to the cab...then i realized, something is wrong. i asked, "150 dollars or ruble?" ..."dollars of course". so i realize he thinks im some stupid american, who has money to throw around, so i said to him in russian" ti savtzem balnoy shtole?"
... " what do you mean, i charge that everyday!" ...."you must be rich!"...."I am"...."i dont need a rich taxi driver!" i found someone else for 800 ruble. |

Check on the Lonely Planet russia guide. There is a phone number of a cab company that only speak russian and will charge under 500 rbl for the ride.
I wonder when the taxi business in Russia will start to be standardised with counters like in Beijing. |
