BTW don't believe everything youy watch on Jerry Springer. It's called ratings. I don't know from a purely sociological point of view but I gather that the majority of prostituites in US as well as other countries are the disenfranchasized population. Tough luck, unfortunate familys and upbringing, and drugs and alcohol. Mental illness also factors in.

Well, as mentioned earlier, I don't know what the Ukraine can do to fix this issue, but what Russia must do is require Visas from several FSU countries like the Ukraine and Moldova (where most of the hookers in Russia come from...not to mention most of the illegal immigrants in general)
I really don't see many problems with the whole internet meetings deal. It is women here that cannot find a guy around here looking for a guy anywhere that is seeking a woman. It is not "mail order" or anything like that. That is the main mistake people tend to make - it is not easy at all to get one of them (Do not know about the Ukraine, as it is what this topic is about, I can only judge Russia). After all, there are more women than men here, so you cannot expect a certain percentage of the female population to live in loneliness untill death because they were not able to marry a Russian man.

People living in Los Angeles and San Diego can easy cross the border to Mexico (Tijuana is just 20 min drive from San Diego) where exotic prostitutes are abundant and cheap.

you are rather prejudice about Ukraine. You admit that you have never visited this country. I hear Kiev and other areas are beautiful. In fact, while Ukraine may not be a big tourist destination, so be it. Tourism is over rated. Also, every country has both beautiful and ugliness. I have friends in Ukraine and have met others who immigrated from Ukraine to US. Their stories of their homeland are sincere just as these people are. I am sure that Ukraine has its own unique beauty for those who are able to see.

I hate tourist places too! I felt so let down that I had to go to Turkey instead of Ukraine to get my visa this year. I have come to hate backpackers because so many of them are upper middle class kids with poorly construed pseudo-marxist ideas and absolutely no clue about real life. Sex tourists are usually dirty old men, and it's great to see people from the states when they aren't BSing each other about being Baptist or Catholic or Presbyterian. A lot of people really like Kiev, and I'm sure my friends were just in a poor, crappy apartment building, but you have to wonder how appealing Ukraine would be if it was black. I'm sure that people would still go to Crimea and Odessa on vacation. Lviv is said to be pretty in the way that Krakow is (they had more in common than not until 1940.)

It's just that there is only a limited amount of stuff that you can do in a place that is extremely poor if the only thing going for it is the tourist industry. I hope Kiev doesn't become like this; I hear that Havana is somewhat like this - consumer goods/services only come in two guages - 'Western' and 30 percent more expensive than you're used to or 'plebian' and only good for a short lived novelty. Security becomes very important as predators flourish. This is certainly true of Africa; tourists drive at great expense in armored Land Rovers to luxury hotels through populated cities with unsightly poverty.
