Hello Folks,
I'm making a return to Moscow in August this year and a return to the MAKS airshow. I would like to know of any bookshops selling aviation books in Moscow and where abouts they are. I would also like to re-visit the museum at Khodinka which I understand to be closed but would like to try anyway as I'm very interested in Russian aviation. Can anyone get me in ??
Is it true that the flea market at Izhmailovsky is open again after the fire earlier this year ? Also are there any other interesting "souvineer" markets in Mosow ? Sparrow Hills ? I would be very grateful for any help / information given.
Best regards,
Ian.
PS. For anyone reading this that is thinking of staying at the Rossiya hotel, don't worry. I stayed there in 2003 and was very happy with my room and service ( maybe a bit grumpy on reception !!) so I'm going back this year. |

I want to make the small remark. Exhibition - fair of souvenirs and pictures - the Opening day which near to station of underground Izmajlovksky the park differs from the present flea market - the huge market of clothes and footwear which is hardly far away. The flea market on Cherkizovo market, but not in the winter burned an opening day. And the opening day still works. The entrance costs 10 roubles.
I know one fine museum of Russian aircraft. It is in the Moscow area, in 40 kilometers from Moscow. It is really excellent museum as I there was 2 times. I live in 50 minutes of walking from this museum. It is a museum open-air. The area of a museum approximately 10*10 kilometers. It very huge also represents a former air field. On this field ALL planes of Russian aircraft, since 1930th and up to modern planes are placed. Each plane is the natural plane out of service. When I there was and there was under Tupolev's Soviet bomber (That 104, it it seems) I have simply been admired and at me have intercepted spirit. In total planes about 140 pieces and about 30 helicopters, including which accepted real participation in operations in 1980 in Afghanistan for the USSR. In territory there is also a covered pavilion in which the space vehicles of Soviet Union similar to the Union and Appolo are collected. There separate modules and the whole collected stations stand. It simply a fantasy!
Entrance on this exhibition symbolical - 1 dollar. It is possible to employ the guide - 10 dollars and 3 dollars more for photographing.
In this museum anybody is not present absolutely if only local residents with children walk. Nobody knows about this place, as this place has been secret in the USSR.
I am not confident, whether it is possible to visit this exhibition to foreigners, but I can specify. I think, that now all is authorized.
And now, how to reach to this museum. It is in the situated near Moscow city of Monino, near to Shchelkovo in Northeast from Moscow. (Underground " Komsomolskaya") is possible to reach the city of Monino only an electric train from the Yaroslavl station. Time in a way makes 1 hour of 20 minutes. Electric trains go frequently, every 20 minutes. There is one problem. If you leave from station Monino and want to get in city it is necessary to pass control check point. In the best way simply to pass it past and to not pay on anybody attention. Then there will be no superfluous questions.
Further, in city it is necessary to ask, where there is a museum of Aircraft and local residents will prompt you road. To go on foot about 30 min.
If you will have this unique opportunity, visit this place. I heard, that from Moscow special excursion rounds in Monino aviation museum are organized. But this information is necessary for finding out in the Excursion bureau of city of Moscow.
If it is interesting to you, I also can mention a museum of Astronautics in the Star small town where you can buy souvenirs of our Russian cosmonauts, such as gloves or a meal of cosmonauts.
