| after a week of panicking, i finally sent away my tourist visa application. to be on the safe side, i included copies of any document they could possibly want, including my travel insurance policy and proof that i no longer have russian citizenship. i also included a separate piece of paper with all the info that i could not fit on the application itself (full addresses, etc). it was a lot of hassle, let me tell ya. and guess what? we got the visas in the post 3 working days later! i was really surprised by this level of efficiency. after all, this is the same place where i tried for a week to reach a human being on the phone, and when i finally got through and asked the person if he speaks english, he replied, "not at lunch time". what the hell?! and yet they managed to sort out the visa in 3 days. good for them! |

Reen,
I am curious. Why did you choose to renounce your Russian citizenship? I am not judging you believe me. Just curious. I am happy you got your visa so quickly. Congratulations! Applying for visas and RF passports are of course a big deal for people visiting WTR. Your personal situation could help others here. BTW Where are you going? |

i had to give up my russian (well, actually, ussr) citizenship when my family emigrated to the US in 1989. back then, dual citizenship was not allowed between the 2 countries. this became an issue when i decided to apply for a russian visa because my US passport says that i was born in moscow. according to the rules, people with russian citizenship must enter the country on a russian passport. i had to prove that i did not have citizenship so that i could get a tourist visa. i had to get a copy of my mom's exit visa, as i was too young to have one of my own. (my name is listed on her's). it took a week's worth of call to find out if they will accept a photocopy. even then i couldn't get a definitive 'yes', but i decided to risk it because it was better than risking the loss of my mom's exit visa. fortunately, i turned out ok.
cyndy, i'm going to st petersburg for 4 weeks with my (english) husband. |

Reen,
Thank you for the reply. I am sorry that you feel you were forced to give up your USSR/RU citizenship. It makes me sad. I know that both US and Russia make big issues of citizenship, and really it is sad for people such as yourself who really are both. But that is government right!
Reen,
is this your 1st visit back to Russia? I am happy for you! |

God damnit! The USSR was a piece of shit compared to what Russia is now. Lemme guess? You are from one of the former USSR countries that got screwed over after the collapse? One of the "stans"? Ukraine maybe? Moldova?
Note: She emigrated the USSR, NOT the RF.
Do you really think that people would be immigrating BACK to Russia after moving away in the 90's if it was a 'piece of shit'?
Vic
P.S. Reen - you can have it reinstated now, pain in the ass paperwork but worth it. |
