We've all got our favorite Buildings, Monuments, Museums and Parks around the world, what's everyone's favorite Building, Museum, Park, Monument, etc in Russia and the CIS?
Some of my favorites in Russia: The Chesma Palace, and St. Issacs in St. Pete.
(Lets see how long this one goes until it becomes another 8 page, off-topic flame thread ) |

okay, this is NOT a building, or a monument, but it is my favorite PLACE in Russia so I think it counts, sort of. It is in Kostroma, which is on the Volga, and it is outside a camp that I worked at. If you follow the forest(you know, the birch tree forests that are so dense that you cannot see the sky) until it opens up to the river Volga, and it is so beautiful that it takes your breath away, there is an enbankment that drops about sixty feet over the river.........the barges come through and in the morning you can see the small boats with the fisherman. There is also a pathway that runs along the river for miles and it is so peaceful to walk, there is nowhere I have ever been that makes me feel like that place. I hope you do not think I am weird, but it truly strikes a chord with me........ |

Vic, I used to live in Monino. I think the museum there is actually pretty cool considering where it is.
But, my favorite monument, without question, is the grotesquely large head of Lenin in Ulan Ude. It's like 3 or 4 stories high. There's absolutely nothing else worth seeing in Ulan Ude (except the nearby Buddhist temple) but Lenin's head is just about reason enough. |

The wooden church built without any nails in Mezhevoy, a small settlement of 10,000 people in western Chelyabinsk oblast' in the southern Urals along the banks of the river Ai.
Of course the setting in this region and the long bus rides to get into the Ural in the first place, make it even more special. The church was consecrated and opened in the fall of 2004.
This is what it looked like when I saw it in early January.
