Is it true when Black-Americans who visit Moscow alone get jacked by the police? I was planning to go to Russia but I know if a person is not in a group they would be fleeced by the police who will use any excuse to take your passport, visa, and other papers for a big bribe. As a Black-American it is the police more than the skinheads who would do the rest after the police. Look forward to replies.

I'm black, I was in St. Pete and Vyborg 3 years ago and nothing happened other than lots of stares and lots of interested people coming to meet me. The Militia (Cops) in particular appeared to treat me normal like everyone else or like they would any American tourist. The police in Russia fleece anyone they deem suspicious or whatever mood they're in and that could be pretty much anyone and everyone. You're more likely to get harrassed if you look or are from the Caucaus than black.

Skinhead attacks happen in Moscow, but they also happen in Berlin, London, New York and San Francisco. Racist people unfortunately are everywhere and Russia is no exception. But this doesn't mean that they are all racist or that they're out to get you. There are blacks and asians and etc in Moscow, and have been there for years. Some get harassed but most don't and live normal lives without any problems. The same can be said about New York, Paris, etc.

The owners of this site interview average Russians and asked them the race question. Their answers will be a lot reassuring to you.
