I've heard that a foreigner can't get drunk in peace because they would be robbed in seconds once they leave the club or bar. If not by the kids but the taxi gangs. Before he/she takes a drink what type of precausions before taking another drink of alkohol? Welcome your advice.

A friend of mine got busted in the Moscow metro for walking around with a bottle of beer. Fortunately his girlfriend was with him to do some talking. I believe he got a 'fine'.

I think for you the real danger would come from your fellow Russian alcoholics. Wink You might be less capable in distuinguishing them from normal people after a few litres of draught...

There are certainly hazards to getting wasted flat-out drunk in Moscow. I know folks who've been picked up by the militsia and others who were ripped off and dumped by gypsy cab drivers.

There are 2 keys to a successful expat binge here. (1) get drunk within short walking distance of your apt. If you can stumble a couple of blocks home you should be fine. (2) Finish drinking by 12:30 while the Metro is still running. They have cracked down on drinking IN the Metro, but just riding it drunk is no problem.

And stay far far away from absinthe. That stuff will absolutely kick your butt and you won't even know what country you're in. No absinthe unless you're with a dependable sober person who can get you home.

Wouldn't common sense indicate otherwise ? Moscow's got over 12 million inhabitants from all over the world. There are thousands of American expats alone who live perfectly normal lives eating out, going to bars, and yes (for shame !) getting drunk, just like the Russians do.

Yes, it's a big city. Scams abound. They abound in New York city, too. If you call attention to yourself as a loud, ignorant foreigner-tourist, then you make youself a target as you would anywhere else. In general, however, it's completely safe and requires the same level of personal security as any other big city in the world.

I've lived here 12 years. Yeah, I was mugged once. I have a friend who lives in Manhatten and has been mugged three times in the last five years. You be the judge.

Get drunk by yourself. Smile That's the only 100% safe drinking there is.

That's no fun, though. Razz

I absolutely love getting roaring drunk and having a good time, but I try (usually) to keep my wits about me. In my entire drinking career I've never had any unfavorable run-ins with the police. I also have no tolerance for people who get so drunk that they can't walk, take care of themselves, etc. Where's the fun in that? Confused

Granted, I'm just still running on what I've read and heard, but it would seem like Intourist pegged it - just use common sense. If you can't keep your wits about you in the US when you're drinking, it's not going to change abroad.

No one wants to drink untill they pass out Confused they just overestimate themselves.

That's another good reason to get loaded alone: if you do drink past your limit, the assholes you are with will be pissed off and won't lift a finger to help you. Saves you a screaming rant in the morning.

Yeah, I prefer drinking alone.Everyone tells me I'm on the road to alcocholism Neutral . But honestly, I always end up having more fun if I do it by myself.

And El Casey, if you are with a friend and he/she gets seriously conked, you should be a good friend and uncomplainingly take care of them.

On the road? I'd say you're already there... it's one thing drinking alone, but having fun drinking alone? Very troublesome.

Let's not have a lecture on being a good friend, ok? I said I have no tolerance for it, I didn't say I don't help my friends. Then again, I tend not to befriend people who get so hammered they can't function - that's just stupid. It has indeed happened, and I've dragged them inside, put them to bed, etc. I tell them about it the next day, too.

I joke about "being a social drinker. I'm VERY social." But I just don't see the attraction in drinking by yourself. Who do you talk to? What do you do? Just stare at the bottle while you drink? Sounds like a blast. Laughing

Well, that's exactly what I mean. What fun is skinnydipping if you do it alone? Wink
