|
|
| I know many people have asked about clothing, but I am a 26 year old female and would like some suggestions on what to wear for a trip to St. Pete and Moscow in a couple of weeks. Much of the time will be spent sightseeing, so I would like to be comfortable but not look like the stereotypical American (white tennis shoes, jeans and a t-shirt) tourist and blend in with young Russian women fashions. Also, we will likely be going out to bars and nice restaurants at night and I would like some suggestions for this as well. Thank you! |

Coloradogirl,
Jeans etc is fine for sightseeing during the day. However, when it comes to "going out in the street" russian women get into the best gear they have, depending on the time of year of course. In summer it would be (I'll stick to your age bracket) high heels, makeup and hair done at a minimum. Maybe Mediashark or AliceFromMoscow will chip in here?
If you bring along something stylish/dressy, with some heels, and some basic makeup you'll be right for tripping the light fantastic.

| What I saw when I was in Moscow for 3 weeks was pointy high heels and very tight clothing. Young Russian women have the bodies for it that's for sure.Very sexy. |

And you a married man!
Coloradogirl, take your best pair of high heels, take a makeup kit, get a pedicure and manicure, buy yourself a few skimpy sun-dresses tank tops and miniskirts. All the best on your trip! |

| Thanks for the recommendations. I was looking for an excuse to go shopping anyway! Any recommendations from the women on here for more casual daytime wear? |

Summer is kick-out-the-jams time for Russian girls. They wear as little as possible with higher heels than you could ever walk in.
I think St. Pete is not so glam/glitzy as Moscow. You can do a more casual look there and get away with it. But pants are [/i]tight and baggy comfy sweats and T-shirts and jeans are definately out. For women of all ages Russians have a more ladylike look than you're used to in the west. Something between Glamour and Hooker.
Evenings out you'll definately need upscale club type clothing. Stretchy little tops, tight pants, heels. Slinky dresses, more heels.
I don't know about SPB, but in Moscow if you don't have the right look and the right (lack of) clothes, face control won't let you into the clubs. You'll be standing on the sidewalk till the sun comes up cause without a vamped up enough look--you're not getting in.
Have fun. |

If you look younger than your age, go ahead and wear sneakers and jeans during the day - you'd pass for a student: nothing baggy tho, plz. But tight doesn't mean two sizes smaller than fits you
If you want to look trendier, look at *European* fashion rags, as it would be closer to what Russians wear. And for the night - be critical of self: not all russian ladies have perfect bodies, of course. But by looking at them, even in seemingly tight outfits, you won't be able to see much of their flows...
Oh, almost forgot: it is nearly impossible to be overdressed for any pm occasion, lest you fancy three-storey hats |

I went to a graduation today (not mine) and decided to wear 3 inch heels. Big, terrible mistake! By the time we were on the subway back, I was limping.High heels are good if you are going to an occassion where you do not have to walk, only have to stand for 20 minutes or less and have taxi fare there and back. |

...i told you so!
coloradogirl, just be yourself, but if you really want an idea, take some time to walk around the city and observe how the ladies dress. Fashions range from anything classy and elegant to funky and clubby.
There are a lot of nice shoe shops around moscow. Jeans too, but ladies wear fancier cuts and are often tight-fitting. T-shirts are not so common unless they're the trendy, tight-fitting type (not baggy ones).
If you're going sightseeing, go ahead with sneakers or low-heels. Also if you're going to bars and nice restaurants, something classic would just do. For clubs, it could be another matter altogether. I don't club myself so I can't tell you.
That's how they dress... as for me I don't really care especially if I'm just doing a few errands around the block. I do dress up a bit for work though--a bit of a fashion war going on there in the HR department (which fortunately, I'm not a part of... I'm in the geek department, but HR is in the next cubicle). I got me a new pair of cowboy boots and the girls have been asking where I bought them... lol! |

| Hi there, this is all fascinating and great advice for the summer time but what does the ladies wear in winter? What do they wear on their feet to the cinema or theatre and do they dress up and just wear a thick coat over, I am really curious what ladies clothing options are in the cold? |

Well, I bought some ridiculously tall heels for going out (to go along with an unbelievably short skirt) and believe me, I will not be wearing them if lots of walking around is required! I wore them around the house for a couple of hours last night just to get used to them and my feet are sore
I'm glad you are suggesting that I can just wear regular clothes for sightseeing. I typically wear tight jeans and tight shirts anyway, so that should be fine. Clothing is very casual in Colorado and it is difficult to even find things here that would be considered fashionable in the metropolitan areas. Everyone here wears shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops. BTW, are flip-flops common in Russia? |

| Hey, remember that even in summer, the weather doesn't even come close to colorado's! Flip flops? No here in Moscow. Only beachgoers in Sochi wear those. |
