I never had a problem with roaches in Russia. I would seethem around the basement of my building, or scampering around the trash chute in the hall, but never in my flat, or my dacha. Expat was right about the boric acid. It come in powder, or granuale, but the powder is best. You put it around the bottom, and inside of all your kitchen cabinets, behind the fridge, in the bathrooms etc. The boric acid takes longer to work because the little critters have to get it on their feet, which in time they will cleantheir feet like a cat, and die. They also take it back to the nest which helps to also kill the eggs. The bad thing is if your neighbours don't do it also it is a loosing battle. Maybe better just shoot them....not your neighbours

I wonder if it would help to do it the American way and call health services on the neighbors. You could charge them for endangering your health, compromising your safety, violating sanitation regulations or something of the sort. There's gotta be something you can get the filthy bastards on that'll make them vacuum their apartment for once.

cockroaches!
cockroaches, you say?
Why in Russia - are there roaches? nay!
Nyet - they were all killed during the October Revolution;
The hammer & sickle cares not for evolution.
USA roaches - they are most disgusting.
Bread crumbs everywhere. Americans eat till they're busting.
Is boric acid the final solution?
Those little buggers evade it! ...thanks, evolution.
Yes they are big, and simply won't die.
All that stuff about extermination, it's all just a lie.
cockroaches?
cockroaches, you say?
let's forget the little buggers today.
A glass of vodka, you'll forget all.
Just don't lose your telephone - you may need that call.

Sometimes, I've pondered this thought about my own neighbours I've had in the past . . . but if the problem is that extensive, then a thorough vacuum job of their pad, most likely, is not going to eliminate the prospect of the little s***s returning to claim the territory like it was once theirs, unfortunately.

There's a Gecko lizard that lives in the wooden framework around my outside front door. I believe he helps remedy some of the pestilence (bugs, especially) in my place . . . but only occasionally, though - because most of those little creeps are way too fast for him sometimes . . . but anyway, that's not going to provide any practical advice for anyone in this forum for now.

Agatha, just stick to the recommendations that some of us have mentioned earlier, and it should alleviate things to some degree. You can also try one of the 'bait' products like MaxForce Gel which is basically simulated roach food (actually poison) . . . and after they hound the stuff down and return to their hideouts - they end up spreading the contamination throughout the various colonies, creating a chain reaction, poisoning other areas, and destroying many of their own ilk. the only things that has ever worked for me is professional termination, otherwise known as "the bug man." They have the serious stuff, they will spray your apartment and you will have to stay out of it for a few hours(strong stuff). Lots of chemical, but hey, if the critters come into your apartment they will die!!! Ask your landlord, it is his job to deal with that issue. I feel for you, I HATE ROACHES!!!

I'll second professional extermination. My parents' house has been absolutely roach-free (granted, the neighborhood is not as wooded as it once was, either) since they got "once a year" pest control. The guy sprays inside and out, nothing that can harm my dog, and I almost never see a bug of any kind inside their house.

Come to think of it, I've seen exactly TWO roaches in my house the entire 2.5 years I've lived there, and although we've had ants on several occasions, almost no roaches. The surprising thing is, my roommates are filthy scumbags and never clean up after themselves. They managed to basically ruin a nice house except for my bedroom and bathroom (they all have to live with each others' filth upstairs Laughing ).

Try the european way : go to the yearly co property meeting, expose the problem and try to find a solution. I guess your neighbours would also like to get rid of the problem, and a regular building treatment finances collectively could manage to find a consensus on hiring regularly professionals.Collective constructive solutions often work better than individual initiatives, especially if they consist of paranoid threats. I don't think there is a way to get rid of them entirely. They've been around for tens of thousands of years and will live much longer; its one of the fastest reproducing creatures around --for every one you kill, 3-10 more are born; they're virtually indestructable as i've seen (to my horror) one survive being cooked in a microwave, and they can and will survive nuclear war as they can take 100,000 times more radiation than humans can.

Boric Acid? Geckos? A can of Raid? Or a nuclear weapon? What will work? Confused

Or maybe we should just fork over the planet to these supercreatures now since they will dominate it at one point or another anyway. Its not like we humans are doing a good job keeping things in order anyways.

Roaches are the only creatures on the planet who can survive a nuclear explosion Smile so that one's out.

That would not work for several reasons, the least of which is that half the people in my new building don't speak English and that there are no co- property meetings in a Queens rental. Rolling Eyes

Please refrain from passing immediate judgement when you know zero about the situation.

Collectivism? Neighborhood groups? Obviously you've never been to the United States, or at least lived there for long. Here we're all about unfettered individualism. If your neighbors don't like it, piss on them! Who cares if it's a health problem? This is the land of the free, baby! Everyone can suck it, because we do what we want!

Laughing

OK, flame away...anyhow, it's almost impossible here to "force" your neighbors (or roommates, for that matter) to be human in their cleaning up skills, or to act like decent folks toward your neighbors. And we like it that way! Cool

True, i ve never rent an apartment in the USA, and that s why I called it the european way Wink

Anyways, i guess there are collective charges for elevator, cleaning corridors, lights in collective areas, transporting garbage...those collective charges have to be decided and agreed somewhere...that s where i would go to ask for a solution for a collecive problem.

Well, I was drunk when I wrote that post, so I glossed over that whole "European" part. Razz But I agree, it sounds like a good solution. I wouldn't mind collectively evicting the majority of my roommates, but alas, this isn't my house - I just live here (rent for the past six months, so what the hell am I complaining about?! Twisted Evil )

Yeah, those are decided somewhere: the landlord's office on the other side of town. That's what you get when you rent. There is also the superintendent of the building in charge of general maintenence and he does all he can.
