I think you should consider trains. They're safe, comfortable and quite enjoyable. You can book 2 cabins (4 x 2 sleeper bunks).

green--it's a train! you can't expect it to be a bullet-train can you? Actually the long ride is part of the charm of Russian railways. Your sleeper cabin will be quite comfortable actually.

I don't know trains for these routes, so I can't advise you on it.

Try www.airbaltic.com maybe there´s no flights via Vilnius but you could try to fly first to Riga or Tallinn. It´s very cheap

there really are no other options, it's the train or a bus. Or as gonzock stated you can fly to Riga or Tallin, and then get on a train for the remaining journey. I am taking a train from St Petersburg to Kostroma and it is 16 hours, I am kind of looking forward to the adventure. Cool

Here is a schedule for Villinus and SPB.
You go Riga first then Riga to SPB.

After that you can fly to Moscow for about 2000 Roubles or take a train.
Russian buses are not the most comfortable, because they are old.

Vilnius to St P is quite a trip

You could do it overnight via sleeper train

Have a look at:

http://www.thomascookpublishing.com/book.htm?book_id=46&series=Timetables

for times.

Deutsche Bahn (German National Railways) do a European Online Timetable including European Russia at:
http://bahn.hafas.de/bin/query.exe/d

You need to know the Station name in St. Petersburg.

Tickets can be bought from:
http://waytorussia.net/Services/TrainTickets.html

The Thomas Cook book is however a lifesaver when travelling by Train - I took the European edition when I went inter-railing.

you can probably get to Tallin by train/car/plane and then take a comfortable ferry to St Petersburg if you like that more than train.

but take 1st class overnight train and you will be fine. Out of that 15 hour jorney, you will sleep for 10 hours and save on 1-night hotel stay.
