| Just wanted to post a warning and curious if it has happened to anyone else. My mom was supposed to fly out to Moscow today (22nd) from Sacramento to Seattle by Alaskan airlines and from Seattle to Moscow by Aeroflot, with 3 hour layover. When she got to Seattle, the flight for Moscow was not even listed, and no one was at the Aeroflot counter, although the hours showed as they were open. Since it is Sunday the only thing she got by calling was a recording saying her flight number was actually from Moscow to New York. When I called a Moscow hotline I was told there never was a Sunday flight from Seattle, and her tickets are for Tuesday (24th). Yet tickets printed for 22nd, Sunday. What a bummer.!Now she is stuck there for 2 days, missing her train, hotel and time, what's important. And Aeroflot officials did not seem to care much. So, make sure dates and times on tickets match with the actual flight! |

| That is why it is worthwhile to confirm with an airline about a flight, or check on website. |

eeeeekk. What a nightmare.
Welcome to the World O' Russian Customer Service. If your mother ever does finally get here she will find more of the same kind of business acumen that Aeroflot has already displayed. Happy vacationing! |

Actually, I came in on SU323 (Aeroflot Moscow - Seattle) on the 19th TO Seattle. They did change the departure time by +2 hours but did this about a month ago and called me notifying me of that. If your mother did not provide them with a telephone number when purchasing a ticket, Pinay na sebya (blame only yourself). The Aeroflot site also had that change listed. Yet, there NEVER was an Aeroflot flight (SU323/324) on a Sunday. The reason I know is that I would have preffered that one myself, and I bought the ticket in the end of January. There is nothing wrong with Aeroflot in this case. Their system is computerized and they WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE to issue you a ticket that they did not have. Ask the travel agency that issued you the ticket. It is their error, not Aeroflot's.
Vic
P.S. No real complaints about the flight - a little long, but wonderfull service. The only thing that bugged me is that they used a Boeing 767 instead of an Illyushin 96. |

Why weren't you on MSN
Just arrived in Oxford, Ohio from Asheville, NC (In just over 6 hours - must be a speed record)
Well, two things changed in my opinion. As you know, I haven't been in the U.S. for around 7 years I think, so:
I found the people to be nicer and more outgoing than I remembered them to be.
I found that (atleast North Carolina and along the way from Chicago to North Carolina and from North Carolina to Ohio) the people themselves and just the atmosphere was simple and almost scary to a point. People have no ambitions and no goals in life, they just kind of live empty lives. Hard to explain. Comparable to Russian villages. I know that all the states I was passing through were "redneck" states and that this was all in small towns (I haven't stopped in any big cities, only smaller towns) so that might have had something to do with this. I just can't recall it to be this...bad when I was here last. Maybe it was just so long ago that I forgot, or maybe I had more experiences in life that shaped me, but I was very suprised to see this. A pity too, the people are kind and do deserve a better future than the one they are getting themselves into. I guess that it is different in the bigger cities like NYC, just like it is in Russia, but still - I did not expect it to be like this.

| Actually she purchased tickets though a travel agency, they said they were never notified by Aeroflot on time... doubtfully though. Still it would be nice if someone would be at their counter during open hours. |

Vic, the exact thing you mention regarding "empty lives" is almost 100% the reason I'm coming to Russia (not to mention being able to get a quality education at a price I can actually afford). My idea of a "full life" is most definitely not being able to buy an overpriced house, have 2.3 kids that I don't want, and put up my little white picket fence with my SUV in the driveway.
Lack of ambition is an understatement, to put it mildly. I know Russia, Moscow in particular, isn't the "wild west" it was in the 1990s, but from everything I've read and learned via this forum, others and books, it's still anything but "sedate."
We should probably split this off into a new thread, so I'll start a new one.

| I am thinking about flying on Aeroflot from LA to SVO in August. Is the airline as bad as I have heard. They have the only non-stop. |

Granted, I've yet to fly Aeroflot, but I likely will in August from JFK to SVO. From the mixed reviews I've read, here's the deal: People expecting a "Western" level of service are going to be extremely disappointed. If you do everything you're supposed to do, pay attention to times, dates, etc. and call when you're supposed to, I don't think you'll have much trouble.
Plus, you can upgrade to first class by giving the stewardess US$200. |

Aeroflot usually has the lowest nonstop airfares, U.S. to Moscow. If another airline is running a 'fare sale', you might find a lower price elsewhere. Economy Class with the newer jets is pretty good. Enjoy the drinks, snacks, meals and movie! |

It seems like a monopoly with airlines going through Russia.
Anyway, what is Aerosvit Airlines like? I'm just curious. Perhaps, this post and any responses will prove useful to a traveller going to Russia. I saw a commercial for the airline on a Russian show where I live. |

I read some reviews on them, as I was intending initially to travel via AeroSvit. They got high marks for the food and service, low marks for in-flight entertainment and apparently business class seats are not much bigger, nor do they recline much farther, than economy class.
All in all, they got a favorable review and I would have no qualms flying on them. Their website is fairly informative as well, especially with regards to the seating layout inside the planes. |

I wouldnt say that anyone would be dissapointed by their service when expecting "western level". The only beef I have with them is that they put their oldest aircraft on the U.S. routes. (Boeing 767's) when the flights are some of their longest. The service was excellent but the seats were a little cramped when I flew SVO-SEA-SVO. The only airline that was better that I flew on in the last several years is Frontier and possibly Lufthansa.
I wouldn't say that Aeroflot has a monopoly on internal flights. They are actually #2 on the internal market after Sibir (www.s7.ru) They are vigorously trying to take the market back.
