Hi all, I have a friend who is looking for an hotel in Moscow for a couple of nights. As she is a single female travelling alone (from Siberia, she is Russian) can anyone recommend an hotel in a safe area of Moscow and also tell me which areas she should avoid. We all live in cities with parts none of us would like walk alone at night in, so please don't take this as an insult. It would be helpful if you could also email deatils in Russian so I can forward her the details. Many thanks.

There no certain unsafe areas in Moscow. Every hotel in Moscow is good and safe. As for me I would recommend you the Izmailovo Hotel Complex. 3 stars, rather cheap, clean and comfortable.

If you want anything better - 4 stars - Hotel Kosmos. Beautiful building of hotel.

Yes, these prices are actual. But prices on rooms at Izmailovo "Beta". Prices of "Delta", "Gamma" and more "Alfa" could different a little.

By the way the cheapest rooms at Izmailovo are always busy.

Vadim, you think the Kosmos is 'beautiful' ? I can't tell if that's tongue in cheek or serious, cause most foreigners consider it a monolithic Soviet eyesore of a building. Not to mention pretty sleazy if you ask me.

The one week I stayed there (and another time I put colleagues up there) prostitutes called the rooms two or three times offering their services, the restaurant(s) tried to inflate the bills, and the cafes are ridiculously overpriced on the first floor. It's also 3-4 stops outside the center and not very convenient location-wise.

The Izmailovo's pretty far out there too. 4-5 stops outside the center. Other than proximity to Ismailovskii Park, I see no reason to be so far outside the center.

If it's wallet you're concerned about, I'd recommend the Budapest or even the Rossiya. Both within walking distance to Red Square. Both about 120/night (although admittedly, the Budapest needs to be reserved much farther in advance).

If you're less concerned about prices, then I might recommend the new Holiday Inn on Lesnaya street (metro Belorusskaya) offering rack rates of $250 (so I'm sure you can get that to 180-200 through the Internet.

I have booked a "renovated" room at Hotel Rossija for 225 Euros for September 30 through Octobe 3rd. At least the 225 Euros was the price I faxed back to Optima Tours (www.optimatours.com). This should have translated to $ 270.00 U.S. With an exchange rate of 1.19. However, when I looked at my Credit card statement I was charged for $ 379.00 U.S., Twice. I am in the process of getting this corrected. Somehow I don' think that I will get it corrected. I'm thinking this will be the "Russian Way". Don't they get it !? I think not. They (obiously not all) just don't get how they are screwing themselves and thier image which affects how they are percieved throughout the world. Anyway...we'll see how it turns out

Moral of the story in my opinnion.....be careful They're brutal

Re: deskware7's entry for the link: http://www.cheap-moscow.com.

I tried Contacting "Uncle Pasha" about his Dutch Loft and he never contacted me back. I don't like his attitude. He's a pompious snob who thinks his shit does not stink because he thinks that he is providing a good service. I'm sure that he has provided legitemate service to many....but he only helps who he wants. I think he favors the female clientele.....

Thanks for all the tips, have booked the Ukraine Hotel. My friend is travelling by train from near Irkutsk (she will have set off late Thursday and arrives on Monday !!!.) In case any of you think I'm tight, I sent her money for the flight but because she didn't know that exact date for a flight the price went up massively. She didn't ask for more money she just booked the train. I have booked her a flight back from Moscow though. I hope she will be able to cope with the taxi toutes at the airport, they really need to be sorted out, I have been twice and they give a terrible introduction to a wonderful country.

Which airport is she flying out of? I will be in Moscow on September 30th through October 3rd and am flying from Moscow to Berlin, Germany from Domodedovo on GermaniaExpress airlines. I chose this airline over German Wings because they fly out of Domodedova and the the Metro supposedly goes out to this airport. It is also supposedly one of the most modern of the Moscow airports.

I too, have heard nightmare stories about the taxi situation in Moscow. It is too bad that they are so desparate they they bog down getting to the city center and give tourist a bad first impression. I know that Russia is an amzing country.....but it's too bad that this kind of crap has to happen.

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Ukraina for 3 weeks in December and January and we thought it was a nice place to live while we were there. They have a very nice breakfast buffet that comes with your room. It's about a five minute walk from Kievskaya metro station which is probably one of the more beautiful stations I've been to in Moscow. Lots of mosaics depicting Ukrainian life. You can actually walk to Red Square from Hotel Ukraina in about 30 minutes. It's a straight shot across the bridge on Novy Arbot.

Hotel Rossia is the biggest hotel in Europe and along with the Delta and gamma alpha complex was built for the Olympics.
I have stayed in all of them and always booked them through an agent here in uk typical price was around £28-35 pernight ($60-70usd)
I found that booking direct with hotel adds considerably to price.
One hotel that was not so good is the Akademskiya in Moscow.
They have various prices and although the foyer is very nice once we stayed there and the room was disgusting.
Best hotel was the Iris congress beautiful place with daily free bus shuttle to and from Moscow.
Both hotels at Dom and Svo airports are nice too.
We stayed at the Iris for 4 nights at about $100 per night.
At reception the advertised prices are $200 PER NIGHT !!!

Is that a particular UK agent, that you might name and recommend, or should any agent be able to offer these prices?

Best one Ive used is select-a-room.They have offices in UK and Moscow.
On their hotel site you can more or less choose from a price list.
There are detailed specs on the hotels with pictures.
Best guy to speak to in Russia is ALexia in Uk Hazel Green.

You can pay with card and booking is done in minutes they send you a voucher by e mail which you simply take to hotel.
Good thing is that you can contact Alex at any time whilst in Moscow or ST.Pete and he will help.If you need to extend your stay he will also book more nights at the same price.

There are lots of others on the net but as they say...........you stick with the ones who give you a good service and I have never gone wrong with these !!
