I see in another thread that Vorteks and others have indicated personal interest in what I think of as more adventerous sports, i.e. wind surfing, paragliding, motorcycles etc. I know more and more people in the US are getting into more of these activities, including persons with disabilities. I went to an adventure conference Friday at Hampshire College and Mark Wellman was keynote speaker/presenter. He is a paraplegic and is a rock climber. He climbed Half Dome and El Capitain at Yosemite National Park. It was really impressive.

Anyways I wonder if adventure sports are becoming more popular in Russia as well. Sports in general are a great catalyst for self confidence, team building etc. At the conference there was also a panel of paraolympians. One of them, a soccer player who competed in Athens and expects to go to Bejing talked about one of their missions-- He just came back from Kosovo where he and other atheletes held soccer clinics for kids who acquired disabilities from the war there. At these clinics the disabled kids played alongside of other kids who were "the so called enemy". But soccer broke down these barriers and divisions.

Adventure sports and team sports does really challenge people and make them strive harder to be the best they can. So is anyone interested in this topic? Especially Russians but really anyone. Maybe the discussion will even manage to be civil! What a novel idea. Smile

Odabo,
That is great that there was a fund raising effort to give a badly injured Russian pilot a plain that he could operate. However Russia's attitudes toward persons with disabilities is very different than in westernized countries. People with disabilities in Russia, even in Moscow and St.Petersburg are not integrated in their society. You don't see people in wheelchairs, blind, or even people with down syndrome anywhere in public. They do not work or recreate in the public. It is a very sheltered life. I suspect it is improving very slowly because there are some grass roots efforts going on to try and change this.

I am not a big motor sports person but I like to kayak and went out in a boat this week. I am going to take my son kayaking next Wednesday. He goes in a double with a friend and I prefer single. Three summers ago though I tried water sitskiing on Cape Cod. It was a big adrenalin rush. I think I have a photo of it and if I can remember how to upload it, I will. Or I can just send it PM to you.
