An friend of mine, an old Pole (so he doesn't speak very good Russian), speaks English with such a heavy accent I have to concentrate to understand him. But he's very definitely fluent, he's been here almost 50 years.

Just keep trying. If anything is teaching me patience and perseverance (two qualities I had been lacking in spades), it is learning Russina. And, like you, I'm enjoying every minute of it, whether struggling or picking it up like a sponge.

Russian is very hard but I'm glad I don't have to learn english. English is so damn difficult because it changes all the damn time. Just keep speaking it no matter how long it takes you to say something right. I wish there was a CD on the "bad words". One of my friends had a CD with bad words in German so every time we saw our German friend we would say something terrible to him in German. Funny every time.

Want to learn bad words in Russian? Just get a hold of any of the 'Leningrad' band's album--in particular their earlier ones. Wink

how does an English-speaker's (particularly an American English speaker's) accent sound in the Russian language?

Cook! nobody answered your question.....
I asked exactly the same question, and to my astonishment a couple of Russians told me American English was more comprehensible. I expected the opposite, as English English has more intonation, giving more impact to various words, resulting in them being more easy to distinguish. Perhaps it has something to do with Russia's focus on America (Sorry UK; that's a fact, Jack). However, American English is phonetically far removed from Russian. Listening to Brits, I always thought they would be easier to understand than Americans jabbering away.
Too bad English took over the world. It's a hideously inefficient language, too full of arcane exceptions and pronounciation rules (Spanish would be 1000x better).

We all answered cook's question. You misunderstood his question. He asked about how does an American English speaker's accent would affect his speech while speaking Russian. Not English!

I think you misunderstood Vettra, Anya. I think Vettra is saying that he personally thinks that a UK english accent seems more authentic in speaking Russian than US English much to his surprise that many believe is the exact opposite.
