I'm not specialist, but I'll try to explain (sorry for my English - I don't know it well).

"у":
1) at: "I'm staying at the window" - "Я стою у окна".
2) belonging: "I have got a dog" - "У меня есть собака".

"о" - "about". "Talking about something" - "Говорить о чём-нибудь".

"на":
1) on: "I'm sitting on the bed" - "Я сижу на кровати".
2) direction to some place: "I'm going to party" - "Я собираюсь на вечеринку"

"за" - "behind". "He stays behind the tree" - "Он стоит за деревом". "за" means really a lot of things, but it's hard to explain for me. May be somebody else can you help with "за" in this topic.

"из" - "from". "Я приехал из Москвы" - "I came from Moscow". Also: "I'm from Moscow" - "Я из Москвы".

"по" - action with something (but it uses quite rarely - there is no rule to use "по", it's rely from situation). For example: "I'm beating punching ball" - "Я бью по груше" (but also you can say "Я бью грушу")

"и" - it's just "and".

"а" - sometimes uses as "but". You should use "а" when one sentence opposites the second one. For example: "It's raining now, but I haven't got an umbrella" - "Сейчас идёт дождь, а у меня нет зонта".

'а' = often more like 'and' than 'but'
but then used in the way like 'and afterwards you have to go to the left..' Not for summing up things, like 'и'

'но' = 'but' and used to express strong oppositions

hi everyone,
thanks for the answer,
is it ok to substitute some prepositions? like на and в for example, to say "i live in a house"

and, another question, but not related to preposition,

if i asked you about a secretary (a woman), with question "кто это?", would you
answered "это наш секретарь" or "это наша секретарь"? and, to say "our secretary
is beautiful", is it "наш секретарь красивая" or "наша секретарь красивая", or both are
wrong?

i have a friend whose "i think" Russian is good enough, but he's still confuse to answer that,

thanks

Substitution of propositions: no. They are bound by the word and the case being used. My teacher tends to get annoyed if i use 'в' instead of 'на' Wink

I'd ask 'а кто она?' (по-профессии)

'наша секретарья' would be the female form for secretary.

hi all!
ummm...so there are "секретарь" и "секретарша"...is there any female pair too for other masculine nouns? or masculine pair for feminime nouns?

other question,

how do you differentiate between feminime nouns with ending "a" and plural nouns with ending "a"? do you just memorize each and every words?

thanks,
