Tales of these spirits must realy be old then coz with new technology these things prove fable, coz here in the old days a lot of people believed in ghost and things (living on fars far away form the city having now electricity ect), my grandfather always told us this story about his old neighbour on their farm who soley believed there was a ghost that would hang around in their vegetable garden in late at night well... lets just say my grandfathers white hores had a craving for cabbages |
Ah, but I have seen spirits, and I am neither an old superstitious farmer nor a very religious person (in fact, almost non-religious). If technology were to destroy all "myths" then we wouldn't have christianity now, would we? I do agree that what we call "progress" has dispensed with many fables and ridiculous stories, but there are things that go beyond our comprehension just the same. |

I believe the same.
As for my previous post, let me clarify that I am a christian, just not a devout person by any stretch of the imagination. The only reason many christians do not see the Old Testament stories (and the New too) as far fetched and ridiculous despite them being very similar in content to folk stories is that they have been conditioned to believe in them all their lives. And, once again, same goes for the superstitious type. |

I doubt if it's all bogus. How much does the climate differ where you live in the States now?
Some 'cultural' habits of people are heavily predetermined by the climatological conditions they live in. Like organizing the funeral for people the next day after they died in the Middle East. Russians also seem to pay much more attention to clean clothes inside the house, washing hands before dinner etc., than i see with people in Western Europe. |

I think perhaps it's possible to catch a "cold" from a draft, but all the same, I don't put much stock in it. But it's hardly a Russian phenomenon. Both of my grandmothers (one Spanish, one Scots-Irish/English of pre-revolutionary descent) would mention this often when I was a child. It doesn't bother me, and to me "drafts" are quite pleasant, a breath of "fresh air" if you will.
When I am at my friend Valeriya's apartment, her kitchen window opens to the city. I often sit in the window (it's a 7th floor apartment) to enjoy the cool air and so forth while her friends complain that it's too cold. It's somewhere near Barrikadnaya (but it's not that metro, it's something ploshchad) and looks onto some seriously Soviet apartment blocks which I get a kick out of. I'm one of those weirdos who likes the "socialist ruins" of the East. Granted, I usually sit in this window after I've been awake for 26+ hours and am half-drunk (still), but it's refreshing nonetheless. On a related matter, in Warsaw I cranked my AC in my hotel room down to 15C at night and, while comfortable, I did wake up with a cold on the morning I flew to Moscow. Once here, it developed into a respiratory infection that required antibiotics (luckily I had brought one "Z-Pack" with me) to eliminate. So maybe it's not all bunk.
Ne znayoo. |

I am still wondering though what is a relation between catching a cold (virus attacking you immune system) and a cool breeze that makes you feel great... |
Doc's advice: your immune system is essentially weakened when you expose yourself to lower temperatures for an extended time. The odd draft would not do you in, but being constantly exposed to these 'cool breezes' isn't a good idea (they are... cold, duh...), especially if you have already been exposed to the virus or are just recovering, it will make it worse.
Of course, it doesn't mean you shouldn't open the window, just make sure you dress warmly if you do. Stale air isn't healthy either...
Casey, autumn and winter is the flu season here, so top up on vitamins, or start taking Immunal if you're the vurnerable type (like me). |

A cool stream of air in an otherwise warm space seems to do the trick. Just the wind or an open window are mostly not as bad as that jet coming from underneath the door. I guess it's mostly people crashing on a matrass on the floor after a party that are vulnerable to this. |

Speaking of spirits etc., I just returned from New Hampshire for my father in laws funeral. He died September 19th. His wife died the same date 4 years ago! Also at the services I spoke with one of my father in laws relatives. She woke up from a dream at 4:00 am on 9/19th, (the time of death of my father of in law). In her dream she was visited by my father in law's mother who gave her the message.
There is indeed a spiritual world! I do not think that is superstition however. |

| The dream has nothing to do with spirits or the existence of the spiritual world. Derams are caused by memories and thoughts. There has been quote a bit of research done on dreams and how they form. The best way to understand it is by readings sceintific books on the subject rather than looking for "spiritual" clues. |

Mr. Spice,
While I agree that most dreams are created by memories and subconscious feelings, there are some people who are gifted in different areas of life. You may be gifted in the rational thinking and analaytical world, where others are more gifted in intuitiveness, creativity etc.
There are things in this world that are not always explainable and please do not be so bold as to suggest that science is always the answer. The world is a mysterious place and we may not understand everything but there is a path for us all and I believe that the spiritual world is as much of a reality as the physical world. Thank God for that! |

| I think science is as mysterious and intriguing as the spiritual world. There are many things in both worlds that we don't really know, and I think a lot of things are linked together. |

But I think we should search for a logical and scientific explanation of the problem, based on years of research and studies before trying to find a "spiritual" explanation. Obviously, any explanation can be wrong and science may not explain certain things.

| YOU BOTH MISS THE POINT. There is no rational explanation for spiritual happenings and spiritual life. If you are aethists I can understand your perspective but spiritituality, mysticism and religion are important elements to most people. Some things you just know. |
