Just a quick question,

I've been reading some of Pushkin lately, and a lot of times I come across the words Ли and Же. They don't seem to translate well into english, and I was wondering if anybody could help me to figure out what they mean, and if they are used in spoken russian at all.

1.
1) ( при противоположении ) and; as to; but ( в смысле "но" ) я остаюсь, он же уезжает — I shall stay here and he will go если же вы не хотите — but if you'd rather not
2) ( в смысле "ведь" ) but ( часто переводится конструкцией с " isn't" ) Да ты же пока еще просто девчонка. — You are but a filly yet. это же всем известно — but this is well-known почему вы ему не верите, он же доктор? — why don't you trust him, he is a doctor, (isn't he)? вам же это не повредило? — it hasn't harmed you, has it? да это же та самая книга, которую я ищу! — why, this is the very book I want!
2.
1) ( усилительная ) ever, for smbd's sake, on earth, the hell когда же вы будете готовы? — aren't you ever going to be ready? пойдем же! — come along! говорите же! — say something for goodness' sake! что же мне делать? — what on earth shall I do?
2) ( выражающая тождество ) same, the same

ли
1.
1) whether, if не знаю, придет ли он — I don't know whether he is coming посмотри, там ли дети — go and see if the children are there
2) ( повтор: ли... ли ) whether... or сегодня ли, завтра ли — whether today or tomorrow рано ли, поздно ли, но приду — I shall come sooner or later 2. ; ( не переводится ) возможно ли? — is it possible? знает ли он это? — does he know this?

Пушкин он вобще любит писать сложными предложениями и оборотами, поэтому не расстраивайся.. не ты один его перевести не можешь Smile
