This week's Blast from the Past topic is an interesting one, that would prove practical for travellers to Russia.

Quote:
Guys,
I remembered one thing that frustrated the living bejesus out of me on my last trip. The public phones and the ones in the railway stations where you pay first and then dial!!!

It would probably be helpful to all concerned to have a run down on "how to use" the various phones.

For instance, In St Pete you have Taxafones, Card phones and others that have dials or buttons. There seem to be about 8 different kinds depending on who put them there. State vs Private.

Another eyeball popper is some phones have four extra buttons, and you push one to talk after inserting your card and dialling the number......

Also....I know a lot of "magazin's" sell phone cards.....but which ones are generally on sale? For example, "Telefonnaya Karta" is..........what?

As for the "Telegraph" office of the railway station.....I'll be going to nightschool to learn a truckload more Russian....it was an experience I don't want to repeat.......

Almost as good as getting a ticket refund and buying another ticket on a different train........

Frankly, I am being so dependant on my cell phone in Moscow, and I've never used the public phone save for the one of the fancy ones where you can charge the phone call to your credit card!

So, who knows the answer to this one?

Yeah, I could never really figure out the phones in Russia. So what i'd normally do is walk into a bar or something, order a drink, and then ask to use their phone Smile Much easier... and it only costs 30 ryb (cost of drink)!
