When I go to russia, I always swap my ring over to the right hand. I think (if I recall) that wedding rings on the left hand mean the person is divorced but I may have got that bit wrong.

| Sometimes the ring on the left hand means nothing. Usually people know that foriegners wear wedding ring on the left hand, so no need to swap. |

| Quote: | | |

[Sigh]
Do NOT send money to a Russian woman you met online. There is NO cost involved other than a US tourist visa which costs no more than $100. |

| Old Russian tradition (I do not know if it is followed now) is that the widow(er)s wear the wedding ring on the left hand in memory of their spouses. |

| I asked my russian fiancee in Siberia and he said it's the classic left hand, 4th (ring) finger. Just like in America. |

I've just started communicating with a woman from there (That I went out with for a while in London, 5 years ago)... and she has a ring on her left hand on the approriate wedding finger. Its definitely not a traditional ring as its very artistic. No rings on the right hand.
So, is she married or what?
I will continue to chat to her, (via e-mail) but I'm curious. I don't want to ask as I'd hate to find out she's married, and I think she doesn't want to tell me if she is...

| hi, everybody. I am from Russia, and I live in Siberia, and I am really surprised to know that somebody wears the wedding ring on the left hand here. Usually it is on the right hand, and I would even say always, I cannot remember any of my friends, who would wear a wedding ring on the left hand, except for my friend who is engaged with a foreigner. So it is always the right hand, but girls here just like to wear a lot of rings, and you could see the ring on both hands and still it wouldn't mean that she is married. As a rule wedding rings here are alike, they are just golden smooth, without any carves, as smooth ring symbolizes smooth family life. Nevertheless, there are some couples who would like to have expensive rings, that would look expensive as well, so they are not just smooth. But nevertheless the wedding ring are always golden.(as far as I know:)). As for the guy who sends the money for the travel agent, it sounds really suspicious.Because the way I see it is that you should send her an invitation letter, and she should go to the USA Embassy in Moscow with that letter. There they require only 100 $ fee for visa. May be she herself doesn't know what to do or something, but still ..... |

Hello everyone. This is a great subject. I too have met someone from Russia and when we first met she was wearing a ring on her left hand. The ring was a band with a diamond in the center, much like the US female engagement ring. I came right out and asked her and she said the same thing as Ksenia said.
I am going to meet her for the first time in spring 2006, and I would agree that sending money to Russia is not a good idea. My Russian lady is young, but she has a job. She would never, in a million years, let me send her money...or to a travel agency for that matter. She would be insulted. So I would have to say this to the gentleman that mentioned sending money to Russia. "Be careful...make sure it is true love".
To Ksenia...We have not decided how or where we will meet, yet. I have not decided whether I want to go to Russia to meet my lady or have her come here. I actually toyed with meeting her somewhere like Hawaii. We would both pay our own way no matter what we decide. Can you give me some advice? I am a bit gun shy about going to Russia. How hard is it for an American to go to Russia? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, |
