Hi all,
I'm new on waytorussia and first of all I'd like to say that it's a very nice and useful site Very Happy
Well, I've been to Moscow and St. Petersburg 3 weeks ago and I've really fallen in love with Russia: I'm planning to come back on winter to visit the south (the weather should be better than in the baltic area...).
I was thinking about Rostov-na-donu and the Rostov region: it's a good choice? Do you have any suggestion/advice about places to visit and how to get there?
Thank you very much

I just returned from a month in the Rostov area--the city of Taganrog to be precise--it is about 50 kms west of Rostov. Very pleasant in summer--like the Mediterranean.

Only way from Moscow to Rostov is by Aeroflot, 1:25 hours at outrageous price--US$ 420 r.t. or by train--like 17 hours but much cheaper and you have a view. I am returning in October, will meet my friend in Moscow and experience the train to Rostov.

Is beautiful country around there--hilly and rich agriculturally--not like the flat barreness of Moscow and north. But I did not "sightsee" as I was guest of e-pal woman so have no advice as to that. The climate is not extreme in winter as is influenced by large body of water but NOT the Black Sea but an offshoot, the Sea of Azov.

I have toyed with idea of taking ferry, Istanbul-Odessa but that means the Ukraine and another visa and then train to Russia. From your location, and if no hurry, you might enjoy that.
Do write if you have questions. Not much doing down there in winter but if you love Russia, I found that the people are more relaxed than Moscow types and very pleasant.

Lufthansa flies to Rostov 3 times a week from Frankfurt, I have used it a couple of times. I also think there is a flight from Vienna via Austrian.

I have spent winter there, it is not uncomfortable at all. It hovered around -5 Cel when I was there in January.

Funny that you mention the cold, while Rostov na Donu is approximately at the same latitude as Vienna and Budapest: 48 North Wink
