Just wondering if anyone can give me the lowdown on coffe/tea houses or cafes in Petersburg.
Are there establishments similar to the ones in the US, wherein lingering over a single cup is expected and tolerated? Or do they expect you to drink up and move on once you've paid? |

| I never had any problems along Nevsky Prospekt when I went to cafes or bars. Sometimes I would sit down with a drink, and look through a few travel guides for quite some time. |

There are a lot of Coffeehouses in St.Pet almost everywhere in the city center. A newly started coffee chain is just called "Кофе Хауз" (local transliteration of the word "coffeehous"). The most popular chain is "Ideal cup"("Идеальная чашка"). In most cases you can take or buy there a newspaper and sit there till the end of the day
Coffeehouses (especially chains) have variety of sorts of coffee with excellent taste: sometimes about 20.
The only difficult is that the signs is mostly in Russian (this is a big issue in the whole city). However you can look at the pictures of cups
or ask peaple about direction
So don't worry and feel welcome in St-Pet's cafes. |

| the thing is, there ARE coffee houses, but JESUS CHRIST, the cups are the about the size of my eyeball! there's no such thing (that i've ever seen, anyway) as the towering, re-fillable grande which is the crown jewel of American commerce. on my previous visit, i spent a considerable amount of time looking for an american-size, american-calibre cup of coffee; i doubt they even exist. when i return to st. pete, i'm seriously bringing a big fuckin' tub of Folger's. |

| Ah, well, nothing to do I suppose but order another cup -- we American gluttons and our supersizes, yeah? Although -- I'm not horribly fond of Folger's myself, if we're gonna be talking about quality of coffee... if Russia's is worse, I may have issues, but I'm sure it's all part of the experience. ;-) |
