|
|
Ok here is my story, I am going to visit my fiancee in Russia, she got me a homestay visa for 31 December to 15 January. Problem is I rented an apartment for 4 nights in Moscow, then we are going to her hometown in Saransk for 10 nights and then back to Moscow the last day. I have a few problems to be solved.
1. Since it is the holidays when I arrive ( Holidays are from 31 Dec - 10 January? is it true? ) then my 72 hours would not end for alot of days for registration? My fiance thinks I still need to register even during the holidays.
2. If I do need to register in Moscow during the holidays, then do I go to OVIR? DO I need a letter from the landlord? What about the fact its a homestay visa? Does she need to be with me?
3. I have not applied for the visa yet and I want to stay 1 day longer then what she put on the invitation from the OVIR, will the consulate give me more time if I ask on the visa application. My fiancee found out her friend is getting married and we want to attend the wedding before I leave. We would actually only be in her city until the last day she asked for, the 15th, and then we would be on a train and in Moscow the extra day or two.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks for your time. Nick |

1. As far as I know this year (2006) there will not be the 2-week holiday period as there was last year, so you will need to register.
2. You need to go to OVIR (PVU) with your friend (and a letter from the landlord).
3. They will only give you a visa for the time span indicated on the invitation, not earlier, not later. The thing you could do is to take a flight to Moscow instead of a train. It's usually similar price.
Hope this helps. |

Damn thats depressing news, I hate russia for this registration crap. I can't even stay in Moscow to see the city unless this landlord will give me a letter. How the hell am I going to get all this done in time.
Ok so I take it weekends don't count, so I arrive on the 31st of december it is a saturday, the 1st of january is a sunday....so we stay the 2cnd in Moscow and leave the 3rd and get to saransk on the 4th and register the visa, it would be on the third day that is not a weekend, would that be allowed?
Sorry I hate the way they set this up, it sucks for tourism and having friends in Russia. I either have to get a hotel which sucks, or go straight to the persons home. |

| Thanks for your help though, I appreciate it, just a bit angry about this mess. I would get a tourist visa with support but then I am stuck in Saransk having to get a hotel there which I can't afford for 10 nights. Its like they don't want people to visit. |

Why didn't you just go for the tourist visa via a third-party 'visa agency' (something similar to WTR's services). You don't even need to stay or book yourself into a hotel. They will take care of the registration for you.

| They can't help me in Saransk, all they can do is send a letter with me to Saransk to give the OVIR, and I am not sure that will be accepted. I don't want to get deported over this stuff. |

Yes, something like that.
About this letter... it really is quite SOP... last time I had troubles registering my biz visa because we forgot to check with our visa agency and they asked for such a letter--I wasn't able to provide it, so we hopped in and out of the city (with a train) to make use of the 3-day rule... I reckon with this letter you should have no problems with the OVIR there.
Feel for ya man... outside major cities services suck big time. But that's Russia for now... anyway you should be able to register your private visa with no problems, only that you have to bear with the Qs. |

| I wouldn't be so worried but it would be a bitch if I got a 5 year ban somehow, seeing as how I am marrying a Russian. I even called the consulate in New York and they didn't know how I was supposed to register my visa in Moscow. |

We have holidays from 31 Dec till 9 Jan this year.
I think if you get tourist visa via travel agency you will get registration in a hotel even if you pay for only one night. Ask your fiancee to find out about it in her town. Don't worry even if you stay here without registration. The worst what may happen is that you will be stopped by milicia on the street once or twice and pay them some money. |

| thanks Ekaterina and all for the comments, I wrote the man who owns the apartment and he said he will help with registration. Just found out Natasha's got her interview date for the fiancee VISA !!!!! So I am going to just deal with the Russian visa as best as I can and leave when I have to and be happy. |
