|
|
I'm making my second trip to Moscow in December and have planned to attend a performance of the Nutcracker at the Bolshoi on a Sunday evening. I was hoping I could get some advice from the locals as to the dress code that would be appropriate for an evening at the Bolshoi? This is a fun trip for me (not business - but a winter vacation!), so I'd like to plan ahead and bring appropriate attire if something more than slacks and a sweater are required. Jacket and tie?
Any comments appreciated.
thanks - danbrew |

You could wear slacks and a sweater. I mean it wouldn't be a horrible mistake, but the Bolshoi for the Nutcracker at Christmas is special. Slacks and at least a sport jacket and tie would probably be more appropriate.
You will see a few jeans there (probably Americans) but this will be a rather dressy affair. Moscow is a dressy city in general. You will see many men in suits and ties and the ladies will generally be pretty dressed up.
I know what I'm talking about. I went to the Bolshoi For the Nutcracker at Christmas 2 years ago. I wore my best Christmas outfit, red and black velvet and heels, and was out-dressed by half the people there. |

Hey, I'm American ... I had front row seats for the Bolshoi on September 22nd (Midsummer Nights Dream) and wore a nice black suit with a rose colored silk shirt underneath and italian leather shoes. My date and I were toooooo coool.
But definitely if you arent sitting in the front, you can get away with a rather casual appearence. Still, where is the fun in that? Wear something nice. |

Wear what you want, but don't wear a big hat.
I thiught that the real Bolshoi Theatre was closed for a couple of years. |

| My wife and I attended the Nutcracker at the Bolshoi (not the main theater) last Christmas day. There was an opera in the main theater at the time. I thought it was fatastic and I'm a beer swilling crude most of the time. Of coarse, I wore a suit and tie and my wife also dressed for the occassion. I would dress as best as your luggage will allow. Oh, and enjoy yourself. |

Of course! You can wear everything you want!!!
It must depend on your attitude, but not on the rules, because in fact there are no any strict rules "About clothes in Bolshoi" in Russia!
Relax! Enjoy the perfomance, but not just being there!! |

Dress code:
office suits and light sirt+tie for a man
and evening dress for a woman. If you want to "suit" to local attitude towards "well culturally educated" persons |

Good News/ Bad News
The good news - you convinced me, friends. I brought along a nice suit & tie.
The bad news - Delta lost my bag and it took an extra day to get to Moscow. I arrived yesterday and had tickets for the performance last night!!
I seriously debated with myself whether to go - all I had to wear were blue jeans and the sweater & leather jacket that I wore on the flight over!! (And those were getting kind of ripe since I'd been wearing them since Friday...) I talked it over with some Russian friends back home via email and the concierge at the hotel and all assured me that I *could* go in jeans. I didn't want to. I'm typically an uncouth slob and spend most of my time trying to not look/act/be so uncouth...! Finally I decided that I just had to go. I had no idea when my bag would arrive, nor did I know if the Nutcracker was playing again this week.
It was wonderful. I did get a few looks, but, then again, so did everybody else who was wearing blue jeans. I saw a lot of people not dressed for the ballet - including myself. So many, though, that most people just overlooked us poor uncouth slobs.
The best part? Mingling & socializing in the bar off the main floor lobby before the performance and during intermission. Champaign and caviar. Wow, that's nice. Too bad they don't have the same thing at the Chicago Symphony...! |
