Hi Dimitri and everybody else!
Next august I'd like to go to Ulan Bataar from Moscow: do you think it'll be easy to get train tickets directly at Jaroslavskaja for the same day without having booked them in advance (1st or 2nd class)?
For the way back, I'd like to go by plane: do you think I can buy ticket in Moscow and what'll be the price?
thanks in advance!
bye

I'm not sure if you will be able to buy tickets for the same day to Ulan-Bataar. If it was some Russian city this would be more probable, for international routes it's harder. I'd say you would be able to buy a ticket at least 3 days in advance.

As for the flight, you could try MIAT (Mongolian Airlines), but one way fare will be expensive. If you want to save money, you can go by train from Ulan-Bataar to Irkutsk and take a plane from there. In that case I'd recommend Aeroflot or Sibir airlines (if you are less than 25 both will have something for $150 one way if bought in advance).

Also, you will need a double entry business visa to make your trip (with a double entry tourist visa you can only travel to CIS and Baltic countries).

That would be really a serious obstacle for working it out!

I saw on the net that many sites propose their services from Moscow to Ulan Baatar, but... when I'm there, how can people get back home?!?

If getting a multiple-entry visa for Russia is hard, I wonder if you have any other suggestion for the way back from Mongolia at a reasonable price, taking into consideration that for the whole trip I'll have a three weeks holidays time.

Beware trying to buy tickets the same day. Much can go wrong! After travelling from St Petersburg to Novosibirsk to Almaty to Tashkent, then to UB, I missed my UB - Beijing direct train, and there were to be no more trains for 6 days. It was possible to go on the same day, but I was lucky.

I would suggest attempting to get tickets before you arrive there.
