Yoshkar-Ola, population 300,000 is located 800 km east of Moscow. It is the capitol city of the Republic of Mari-El. By train it is about 14 1/2 hours. There is only one train and it leaves Kazanski Vagsall in Moscow daily around 5:00 PM arriving Y-O around 7:30 AM. Get a sleeper berth, 1st class (Spalny) 2 beds per cabin, aprox $135, 2nd class ( koupay ) 4 beds per cabin, $55-$65. The higher price includes box lunch and cost of bedding, lower price does not include meal and you will have to pay seperate for bedding. There is also a dining car. Return trip leaves Y-O 6:00 PM daily arriving Moscow at 9:00 AM. There are 2 hotels in the city but I reccomend you rent a flat. Just google Yoshkar-Ola agency and contact one.
