Hello,

I hope somebody can assist me with my little problem.

My child and I are US citizens. My wife is Ukrainian citizen.

My wife and our child are travelling to Ukraine via Moscow (SVO), but would like to visit her brother in Moscow.

One company which provides visa support has advised me that it is impossible for a 3 year-old child to get a russian visa in her US passport. This seems unlikely to be true.

Does anybody have experience with such a case?

Ukraine offers the 3-year-old a 5 year multi-entry visa - and waives the issuing fee as well - so it only costs the $100 application fee. The Ukrainian embassy currently has her passport, so I don't know if they will actually issue it, but they've had it a week so it seems like the application has not been immediately rejected. I find it amazing that Russia would be so completely different in this respect.

They are flying in less than two weeks.

Thanks,

Sorry to reply to my own question...

Having searched your forum, I see that my daughter clearly cannot travel to Russia by any other means than having her own visa in her own passport.

The question is, will the consulate issue her a tourist visa - and if so how do I get visa support.

It was, in fact, the visa support company linked to this web site who told me that it was impossible.

Thanks,

I would imagine that your daughter has to already have a transit visa if she is going through Moscow to begin with. I don't see why a child could not have a visa regardless of their age as long as they have a valid passport.

You might want to call the Russian Embassy and see what they have to say.
I think the major issue is that your daughter is a US citizen and your wife is a Ukranian citizen. Because of this they almost have to issue a visa.

Well, just for info...

----------------snippet of email from visatorussia.com----
The fact is that your child can't receive a separate visa.

If I were I would enter the child's info into my Ukrainian passport that
would not affect her US citizenship.
This would give her Ukrainian citizenship.
The process is complicated but once done, your child can travel as often as
needed without any additional paperwork.

-------end of snippet ----

I talked to the Ukrainian embassy and they said that establishing the child as a Ukrainian citizen could only be done in Kiev - in person, and that in any case, the child would have to have a visa to travel to Ukraine the first time. Further, that although it was possible to claim Ukrainian citizenship for the child, Ukraine does not recognize dual citizenship. In short, I don't think visatorussian.com correctly understands Ukrainian laws of citizenship.

So...

I have applied for her visa through another company (gotorussia.com), who assures me that there is no problem with her recieving a tourist visa.

Honestly, I think the visa support company - visatorussia.com - linked to this web site - doesn't know what they are talking about. Perhaps they are inexperienced with making visas for a child.

On the plus side, I think they have a certain integrity - that they refuse to sell me something that they believe I cannot use. I respect that.

Ashton,

Thanks for your comments. As I understand it, making a connecting flight in any international airport does not require a visa to visit that country. This is as true of SVO (Sherametavo) as of CDG (Charles de Gaul) airports.

I called Aeroflot and they confirmed to me that this is true.

Also see the current film "The Terminal".
