Hi Everybody,

I last april a applied to a scholarship via the Russian consulate in
Dominican Republic. I applied to a master's in civil engineering at
People's Friendship University of Russia. In august i was told i had been awarded the scholarship, so i bought luggage, clothes, cancelled many curses i was going to take and almost bought an air ticket to russia. Then a week ago the responsible at the embassy told me that there was a mistake and that i wasn't going to study in Russia. I need an explanation of this because i am still shocked. After two months of planning i don't understand what happened.

Can anybody please try to contact those guys and ask them what happenned ? This is the contact information i found on their website :

Dr. Gennady G. Sokolov
Vice-Rector in charge of University's international affairs
Tel./fax: (7095) 434-66-41

I hear the distress in your post. I'm not sure how we can help you. Did YOU try to call them?

From Puerto Rico you should be able to call that Russian phone number by adding a 011. Thusly: 011-7095-434-6641. That should get you through. Do you speak Russian?

I am sorry for the situation. It is useless if we call there. This is the phone number of vise-rector of the University and he wont talk to any of us at all. If you know the truth that they decided to give your place to someone who could pay good money, will you feel better? Anyway no one will tell us the truth.
During Soviet time we had free education and talanted people could enter any Uiversity they wanted. Now it is going to a market, everything may be sold and bought. There are many Americans on this forum so they may explain why it is so good.
I couldn't help my daughter to enter a University last year. She wrote a composition without any mistake and got 2 for it. It was department of mathematics and the comission said that she was very good at mathematics and they would be happy to have her at their department if we pay money for her studying.
If you were a son of any African king you would study there but we can't change your situation now. So forget about it, actually it is a weak University, or try again next year if you are keen to study there.

Victor,

I don't understand why you want go and study in Russia while you even don't speak the language.
If your main goal is getting a master in Civil engeenering I think you'd better choose a university in an english or spanish speaking country.

People's Friendship University of Russia - is not the worst choice. Plus it is much cheaper than in english or spanish speaking country (as I know), excluding third-world countries. Education level is high (much higher than middle-level university in Europe). And it doesn't need initial knowledge of russian.

http://www.rudn.ru/eng/ - maybe it will help you?

http://www.rudn.ru/eng/contacts.php - Have you tried this?

http://www.rudn.ru/mail.php - here you can write mail directly to selection committee
1st field - text of message
2nd - your e-mail
3rd - your full name

good luck!

Hi I am Native English and work as a teacher in the South of Russia and know the system quite well

Your place as 99% been sold ---- and corruption in the educational system is crazy---- 18 months ago I actually wrote an essay in English which was 100% perfect---- even using big words Smile submitted it under a students name who I know never paid money to anyone--- just to see what would happen---- I even knew the person who would be marking this paper--- but said nothing
As this girl who I did the work for was not on the bribing teachers list she only got a 3----- the top mark is 5

Just made me smile but also ashamed of people I know within the education system---- to find the corrupt teacher I just had to look in the staff carpark
The end of this story is that I spoke to the examiner ---- ( who I knew ) she said she will look at this girls work again

SHE then got 5

The point of my story is you could be the cleverest person on the planet--- but studying here will cost you

Your place has been sold

sorry to be so honest

Lee

victorperez: Instead of guessing and asking for help, you should call them. If you were going to study in Russia, you must know some Russian, don't you? Or, if you were supposed to study in English, there must be a few people that deal with foreign students at this university that you can talk to on the phone and ask what happened exactly. Did you get a letter confirming that you were accepted by the university? How do you know they accepted you?

Maybe the embassy made a mistake. No one is going to talk to other people about your personal information and acceptance. You should call. And if you speak no Russian at all, don't go to Russia for studies.
