Hi everyone, I am from Italy. I have many russian and sovietic friends and they are people I do admire. I think russian people have a wonderful personality mostly. They are able to be happy with few and go get surprised with little things. I have respect for them, but... people here in Italy have a very bad opinion about them. Italians mostly thinks that the first quality of a russian person, especially if it is a woman, is the faculty of saying lies, only lies. Italian people think strongly that russian people are liars. I don't share this! Don't get me wrong. I am a person that hestimates sincerity above many things. But wonder why here people think this. Why italians say that russians are liars? Actually people are not crazy and I if they say this is not without a reason. What's this reason?
The sovietic people I am friend with look so neat, so sincere and so generous. I always find this in russian people I meet but... is it appearence? Is it a fake way they have to make you trust in them and later do what they want??? What is real? The aspect we see or the things italians say about?

That's an interesting observation from the point of view as an Italian. Smile

I can attest that Russians are sincere in their expressions, speech and actions for most part, once you get to know them, or if they like you at first sight. It works both ways, if the person feels unhappy, he or she will show it, and not force themselves to smile all the time. If the person is really happy, he or she will look cheerful and be nice to others.

I think this 'lying' bit comes from the handful of Russians who have contacts with Italians, as being a foreigner in Italy, one could start to feel apprehensive and defensive, and start to use lies to fend for themselves--they don't want the other person to see through them, especially if they don't trust the other person.

That's my general observation. Of course you meet people who always seem cheerful not matter how they really feel, or people who are just real grouches inside and out. And so on. People are still individuals

If a Russian is truly your friend, he will only lie in order to protect your happiness. Things like honesty aren't considered as important as everyone getting along well. Russian men are completely unfaithful spouses, but on the other hand they don't really mind when you cheat on them.

Russian women really just lie to themselves. Like there were these three girls in one of my classes at the institute that were whoring themselves at a club. I was there with them and they said 'we're going to another club with these guys for a few hours and we'll be back.' They didn't know that I understood Russian as well as I do.
