Hi,

I will enter Russia by train from Vienna through Belarus. I've heard that there are no controls at the border between Belarus and Russia. So there won't be anybody to give and stamp a migration card for me. Maybe I will receive a Belarussian migration card - but I think it won't be valid in Russia - will it? I want to leave Russia in the Far East by train from Ussuriisk to Harbin. I'm sure there will be problems without a Russian migration card. Any ideas how to solve this problem?

thx --nero23

Sorry, but I want to ask this question once again. I asked in some other forums, at the Russian consulate in Vienna (where i live) and at the Austrien embassy in Moscow but nobody seems to be able to help me with this issue.

So, again: it seems that no migration cards are handed out and stamped when crossing the Belarussian-Russian border by train; one receives only the Belarussian migration card when entering Belarus. This card is not valid in Russia. Peolple are talking about this at the Lonely Planet forum. They say that a Belarussian stamp on the Russian visa is accepted in Russia but NOT a Belarussian migration card. Nobody of the LP guys does know anything about what to do...

I'm getting a bit nervous because my journey will start soon and i feel scared when thinking about entering Russia more or less illegally.

So my question: What has to be done in such a case? Is there any place where i can exchange the Belarussian migration card for a Russian one?

As i said, nobody was able to answer me this question so far, so you are my last hope...

thx

Hi nero23,

You have done all you can. Despite my protests, both sections of my migration card were taken at the Kazak-Russian border, inbound to Russia. This caused registration problems for me when I needed to register near Irkutsk, but the OVIR sorted it out for me.... in, oh, about an hour. I don't think they'd ever seen an Australian there Smile

It did not, however, cause problems when leaving Russia.

Remember, Russian border control rules change frequently. It's such a huge country that guards on the Chinese border are literally a world away from the Belorussian border. I do find that if you're polite and truthful, border guards will do what they can to help you. Always remember to have a stamped customs declaration!

If it's really bothering you, ask for a notarised document from the Vienna consulate explaining your situation.

Cheers,

JT
