I have visited Moscow a few times already and stayed in apartments. Now for the first time, I am going to stay in my girlfriends flat. What do I need as far as Visa is concerned and is there anything else I should be aware of when staying in private accommodation?

You can get a normal tourist visa (a private visa is too long and complicated to get). Then you would need to register at your girlfriend's apartment. If you do it through the government registration office it will cost you $10 and will take the whole day of walking around from one office to the other and queueing. You can also register with the agency that provides your visa support. If you apply for visa support through this site, it will cost $30 US plus $50 US for the registration (done in 1 day). That will be completely sufficient and legal registration.

Thanks W2R. I have used your Visa form in the past, but where do I get the private accommodation registration form.

ian100, you should be able to get this form from the PVU (OVIR). I have read this year that registering at a private residence on a tourist visa is illegal, but I have had no trouble doing this in the past.

It took about an hour at an OVIR near Angarsk to register my visa there. They provided all the forms, but if outside Moscow, you will want to speak good Russian, or find a friend who can translate.
