Hello,
Just curious about driving in Russia. My mate and I have planned on driving from Russia to St. P., then from there to Kiev. I have heard horror stories about driving in Russia, however the train seems to take an inordinate amount of time going from city to city. Is this the faster way to go?
I also heard horror stories about driving in Poland, but found that to be simple and pleasant. Of course, I live in Los Angeles so if you can drive here you can drive anywhere.
Thanks for any advice!

Driving in Russia is not that terrible, but I would not drive to Kiev if I was you. Borders are not friendly places and renting a car and taking it to Ukraine may be difficult, to say the least. In general, the smaller cities outside of Moscow and St Petersburg and other major cities are not that developed. Many roads are bad (like in Latin America), the signs are absent in many places and the rental company may not even allow you to drive your car outside of main city centers. But I don't know all the details.

Let's just say that LA freeways cannot be even compared to the suburban russian roads.

Here are some links to consider:

Driving in Los Angeles is a cake walk compared to other places because we have wider lanes in L.A.

I doubt if driving will be faster on those long stretches than taking a train that just goes on through the night. Unless you want to drive in shifts, as you won't be able to sleep behind the wheel Wink
Also the roads in Los Angeles might have less holes in them...
