No one was able to give me a satisfactory answer... The reason why I post this under this section of the forum is that we were issued an 8 days valid transit visa to travel by the Transsiberian - the root of our problems, actually... Thank you, Mircea

No, you don't need to register it. You need to register a visa if you are staying in Russia for longer than 72 hours (working days). If you are traveling in the train, you don't need to register for that time (while you are traveling).
