What do Russian people read? Particulary young people, say, in their 20's? Are there any good new authors from Russia who I could find english translations of their work?

Now everybody reads Dan Brown, before him – Paolo Coelho (?). Last 5 years Russian detectives became very popular. A lot of detective-writers have appeared: Marinina (contemporary detectives), Akunin (historical), Donzova (contemporary funny detectives),… Also we have modern scandal writers Sorokin and Pelevin

The Dan Brown and Paul Coelho are 100% correct (based on my experiences)... I'm surprised at how quickly and thoroughly some pop culture permeates Russia.

I'm not sure about current young writers in Russia. I would recommend Mikhail Bulgakov as a great Russian writer that you were likely not forced to endure at the high school or university level (ie Dostoevsky, Pasternak, Pushkin, Tolstoy).

You might also want to read "The Gadfly" by Ethel Lillian Voynich. I'm told this is rather popular in Russia .. and that Russians are often surprised that Americans dont know her (she is an American author). It is interesting to note that Miss Voynich is American author, and popular in Russia ... and compare this to Ayn Rand (Russian) and popular in the US. These two writers had very different messages.

The Gadfly is a short book and can be found online here.
