| AT in Russia its called Samagon. It is good and can sneak up on you if you are having too good of a time. Problems are what other ingridients are in there besides the one they are telling you about. Just be carefull. Remember, Stolichnaya is still the standard of good vodka. Clean, made from grain (key) not sugar or potatoes. Lowest hangover aftereffects. IMHO |

You're referring to blindness caused by methanol-poisoning...
It is said not to be too hard to prevent methanol from forming while distilling. It boils at a higher temperature than ethanol, so can easily be avoided if you control that.

Now we are gathered together here to discuss technology of makin hi-quality home-made vodka.
IMHO the best samogon is from herbal, flowers and some berries. It is very tasty and no problems because of headache the next day The tehnology is very simple - you need only much sugar (12kg sugar = 1 liter of spirit 85 degree)and sometimes barm and special simple apparate. You can buy this apparate via Internet - costs up to 50$ or buy it in Russia in a province for up 30$. AFAIK.
And then you can make hi-quality spirit at you home and share it or sell this to your friends
When I was a student at the Univercity my poor student mates wanted to get some cheap booze. And they found a way. Once they bought some parfume - "eau de cologne" at a drug-store. This parfume costs 0,2$ per 150ml - 80 degrees of spirit - equal 1 or 2 bottle of vodka. Then they could drink it and to became drunk in a moment + get an aroma of perfume.
And now I can see some poor people buying this cheap eau-de-Cologne to became drunk. And I feel sad to see these old men and women who cann't find any way out of their problems and found decision in this alcohol. |

Well. Yes, I agree with you, but we can do nothing. But 15-20% of russians regullary drinks perfume, antifreeze for cars and liquid for cleaning glasses and windows because they has no 2 dollars per a day to buy standart bottle of vodka. And I think that almost 2/3 of men in Russia have tasted antifreeze once in their life |

I have personally seen people drink Hair Spray, Mouth wash, Photocopier fluid, Disinfectant, and so on. So it is not just a Russian thing.
You can make a still cheap. You can purchase a pressure cooker and two sizes of copper tubing and marbles. You tap the pressure cooker with the tubing and place marbles in it. Longer the tube, better the quality of product. At the top, you cyclical the tube with the marbles into another tube with cold water.
Cold water will cool the alcohol and place in a glass container.
the key is keep the temperature regulate so that methanol does not evaporate, but ethanaol does.
Born in a poor part of Canada with bottles of alcohol costing $18, we have become the experts of getting cheap alcohol.

That is really sad guys, I feel sorry for people who are so dependent upon alcohol, that they will put their bodies in such jeopardy. |

wwwadim: I don't believe you when you say people drink anti-freeze.
There was this scandal years ago, in Austria. People were killed because of anti-freeze that was used to sweeten some cheap wine. I can't really imagine people drinking something that consists mostly of methanol and live through it.
Bad vodka, okay, but anti-freeze... Maybe very bad anti-freeze?? :S |

Anyone seen the movie 'Dalecarlians'? It figured a girl from Stockholm visiting her family in the Swedish countryside. At a party there they also poured home-made vodka from a large jerrycan into bottles, so it'd look more trusted.. Alcohol seems a thing of nordic countries in general, not just Russia |
