| Has anyone been there? What accommodation possibilities are there? What are the people like toward foreigners? Any particular problems regarding crime, violence? Is this a town where they would have heard of rugby? Appreciate any help anyone can give. |

| Paul, thanks for your reply, but I think I must have been unclear about what I was asking. I really wanted to know whether there is rugby in Yadrino rather than Russia as a whole. Actually I've coached in the south of Russia - in Rostov on Don. I went there 2 years ago to help coach referees. That's a story in itself, but I'd really like to know more about Yadrino the town. Best wishes, Ansie |

Paul, thanks again for coming back to me. I have never had anything to do with League in my life. I consider it boring and totally unimaginative, but I know that there are many who would vigorously disagree with me. So be it. I played at provincial level for two seasons at home and then finished my career playing a season of first division in France.
My grandparents all emigrated from Russia immediately after the revolution, and I have a terminal curiosity about the place. Been there on several occasions and met some good people. Would be dishonest if I said that I didn't notice the almost unlimited number of pretty girls. Generally, whatever anyone may say, those people are all right. |

Believe or not, league is a little bigger in Russia, because of the money factor.
I was suppose to play in Moscow 3 years ago for Slava for the great sum of $50 USD a month for 3 months. I thought about it and declined.
Only other team I contacted was a team in St Petes who are ALL hara krishnas
I still hoping to play a game this summer. If you have contacts that can help, it would be appreciated if you could help me.
France national team has lots of Slavic named players. I think the future of Rugby is in Eastern Europe. Georgia Russia matches attract almost 30,000 fans!!! |

Paul, US$50 per month would have maybe bought you a round of drinks. Well declined!!!!
The Russians have a lot of very good athletes, natural talent and considerable enthusiasm, but they're up against it because of the distances involved and the lack of money to co-ordinate their rugby programme on a national basis. The strongest rugby "province" is Krasnoyarsk, east of the rurals, where Russia played its qualifying match against Ireland just before the last RWC. In the south where I went they're also quite strong.
The present coach (and the previous one) is South African. I know the previous guy - he loved it there once he overcame the shock of his initial introduction to the lifestyle. He took 4 very Afrikaans guys with him to Krasnoyarsk who played for Russia in several of their qualifying matches and who ultimately were the reason for Russia being barred from qualifying for the RWC. This was very unfair because although the 4 guys had no Russian roots (unlike me) they had never played for anything other than Vodacom Cup teams and had as much right to play for Russia as any of the players you guys or the Aussies have stolen from South Africa
I'll see what I can do about getting you a name(s) in Russia - I think you'd enjoy spending some time playing there. I don't know the present national coach personally, but I know a lot of the current Stormers Super 14 players and someone is likely to know him (I believe he's from Cape Town) . I'll get back to you.
By the way, nice "talking" to you.
Regards,
Alan |

I was well aware of them getting banned. The ban was one thing, but the threat of the fine was horrible. Spain was the one who complained so much. Japan has heap of foreigners playing on their national team. Even Wales had an Austrialian play for them, and nothing was said. I think the fine was going to be $250,000 USD which would have wiped out the Russian Rugby Union.
I heard of the Krasnoyarsk and Tbilsi Rivalry is one of the most intense. |

You're right Paul, the key issue being that "nothing was said". I still can't understand the difference between Cobain playing for Wales and Tenk Hendriks playing for Russia.
I guess that double standards like this are imposed when it involves the weak; can you imagine anyone challenging Rathbone's right to play for Australia or Stuart Abbot or Mike Catt's right to play for England?
The Georgia - Blue Bulls (formerly Northern Transvaal) connection is quite interesting. The Georgian national team come to SA every 2nd year now to play the Bulls and the Bulls go there in the odd years. South Africa A went there a few years ago and I spoke to Gaffie du Toit after he came back. Couldn't stop telling me what a great place it is. Haven't been there myself but I'll put it on the "to do" list. Anyway, got to do some work. See you later |

Cheap pints, great wine and great hospitality in Georgia.
Let's face it. The 6 nation and tri nations have always kept the other nations in back water. Argentina should have super 14 team and maybe make the tri nations in 4 nations. Plus the endless plundering of the talent Pacific Island teams, Eastern Europe and North America. Argentina played France one game in which the French released its national players and they refused to release the Argentian players.
I hope to see Eastern Europe superleague. If you look the 6 Nations B, you have Russia, Georgia, Ukraine, Romainia, and Czechs. Lots of natural talent.
BTW I am still hoping to purchase a Russian Rugby Jersey. Any ideas? |

Paul,
Agree with you re Argentina having a S14 team and most certainly that they should be in Tri Nations. The reason they're not is because of one thing and one thing only - selfishness.
I'd like to see the "6 Nations B" get greater exposure to the mainstream countries, even if it is only to the extent already happening in South Africa, where we regularly entertain the Russians and the Georgians.
As to the jersey.....see what I can do. Our Afrikaans "mafia" is every bit as extensive and as collaborative as the Russians |

Can trade you a signed Canadian Jersey from 2003 World Cup Qualifier for a Russian Jersey?
Don't forget that both Krasnoyarsk and Tbilsi default in ENC. So economics also needs to played.
Should have the world cup in none tri & 6 nation country. |

They should have had it in Japan. Apart from anything else, it would have eliminated the home team advantage for all of the majors, which would have been great. But as I said, selfishness is part of the IRB constitution and philosophy.
I'd personnally like to see it in Romania. Those guys have had it so hard for so long that such an event would be a massive boost to their economy. Rugby people being what they are I believe that most punters would still go. I mean if people make the effort to travel all the way to bloody Sydney, they'll surely put up with a bit of discomfort in Bucharest. Kiev or Moscow don't quite have the rugby culture to warrant such a tournament....yet.
All the best,
A |
