A couple of lessons learned for US military attempting to get Russian visas while serving in Germany:

1. I made reservations with a hotel that promised an invitation -- that took more than a week to arrive and then noted that my family was German. Make sure that you attempt to get your invitation a looooong time before you need it.

2. When I traveled to the Russian consulate in Bonn I discovered that I needed at least 10 days before getting my visa -- i.e. no one day turn arounds for military. See point 1 above and make sure that you go for your visa well before this 10 day period becomes critical. In my case, it ended my Russian excursion. Sad

3. My family has personal passports and US gov't issued passports with SOFA stamps. I had given the personal passport info to the hotel for my invitations, but learned once at Bonn that the consulate would be looking at the SOFA stamped passports since my family are US citizens living in Germany. Use your SOFA stamped passports for dependents.
