The Russian consulate website indicates that for Business Visas a COVER LETTER from a business (or individual) is required for a Business Visa.

I will be travelling to Russia extensively and independently, so I want to apply for a Business Visa, but what should I do about this cover letter? It says that an individual can write it, but are there any guidelines about WHAT it should say? MUST it be from a company? What should my 'reason' for visiting Russia be?

Also, I noticed that the New York consulate doesn't mention anything about the cover letter. Would it be better to apply for my visa there?

Please help!

I wrote my own letter as business consultant for my non-incorporated consulting company. In the UK they advise you to provide some additional info like salary or bank accounts to show that you are not a destitute person who will end up as a refugee in Russia. You should check the details given at the Russian embassy website in your country.

There are an incredible number of business opportunities in Russia that are just about to take off. As long as Putin's style of government continues to make incremental improvements, then we will see an economic boom in Russia similar to the postwar boom in the USA in the 1950's. You can even see some of the same signs in Russia such as the small cafe/motel businesses springing up along the highways and the new petrol/gasoline stations being build in the smaller towns and cities. And the suburban housing developments "kotedzhi" springing up on the edge of the cities.

So do apply for your business visa so that you can do first hand research and make contact with local business partners.
