Hi, I'm working on a russian play called "Black Milk" and it tells a story of how a man who was badly burned was on a train trying to get to hospital. THe police decided to investigate at the station and were checking papers. He didn't have any so they arrested him and he eventually died.

I have a few questions about this- what would the papers be exactly? Also does this happen- having your papers checked. What happens if you don't have them on you? Do you have to carry them all the time?

Thanks
