I'm visiting Russia for three weeks around Xmas with my wife and stepson who are both Russian and my other two children (kiwis). Previously I've travelled on a business visa and been met & registered at the airport - but this doesn't seem an option with the children. Instead my mother-in-law is arranging the paperwork for a private visa.
When we arrive in Moscow my wife & stepson will go straight to Omsk as they need to get their internal passports updated, mother in law will meet me and the other two children and we plan to visit St Petersburg and perhaps one or two of the Golden Ring towns over a week or so before rejoining the rest of the family in Omsk.
My question is if we stay in a hotel say in Moscow or St Petersburg will they register us for the whole of our stay or for this portion? (presumably mother in law can register us in Omsk when we get there). If not what do we have to do to meet 72 hour requirement? Question

Hello Kiwi

You only need to register once for your whole stay. I normally stay in private accommodation out in the regions and unless you register at a hotel, it's real hassle for you and your hosts. It's ridiculous, but I pay $15.00 for one night at a cheap hotel, don't used the room, but they register me - this seems to work OK

Also I completely forgot about registration during a 7 day stay this year, and no-one gave me any hassle at the airport - I exp[ected a fine. I think it's one of those Russian things where the regulations are quite stringent but they tend not to be applied.

Have a good trip
John

Thanks for the reply,

So just to make sure I understand, are you saying that even though my Pte Visa invitation is from Omsk I should be able to register the whole of my stay when we stay the first night in a hotel either in Moscow or St Petersburgh, regardless of the visa class? Is this correct?
I'm not game to take the rsik of not registering, you may be right re enforcement but the potential hassle with my children is not worth it.

No, it’s not worth to take any risks with the officials. And especially now that cops are checking documents practically everywhere in connection with the latest incidents.
My advice to you is to register every date of your stay in Russia and in every îáëàñòü/êðàé where you stay 3 days or more (an îáëàñòü/êðàé is a pretty large area). Maybe you can do it the way you asked. But in my experience most hotels refuse to register for more than your actual stay. No matter what, keep all your tickets including the plane ticket. This will make potential meetings with cops easier.
When you arrive in Omsk, your grandma can have your passports registered at the OVIR office where she got the invitation.
The big problem now with registering more than 2 or 3 times is that the migration card is extremely small and has no room for more than max 3 stamps. What to do when it’s time to register the 4th time – I unfortunately don’t know. Perhaps they will put the stamp in your passport. Perhaps on your forehead.
In your place I would call the Russian consulate and ask about these things. Chances are they don’t really have a clue. The registration system is made for visitors who stay at one place all the time and arrive there with a plane. When your plans are a little different, they don’t seem to have any perfect legal solution.
I hope everything goes well on your trip, but before I let you go I have one final question: how was it that you registered your visa at the airport? I never heard of such an option before, but find it very interesting. Maybe you could do the same now?
