Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knew a better way to send packages to Russia? I sent one to my friend in July (not air mail) but she still has not gotten it. I am a little upset because it had some things in their that I really wanted her to have. Do packages often get lost in the mail in Russia? Or does it just take a really long time, and I shouldn't be worrying about it? Please let me know. Thanks,
Rachel

Mountaingirl and DAN23,
I have both sent from and to Russia parcels and packages up to 20 Kilograms from down here in OZ. The delivery time to and from Russia is wildly variable. I have received goods from within a month to up to four. Generally stuff I send takes up to 3 months, even if air mail!

On a personal note, the mere thought of having to deal with the Russian Post (again!) makes me want to find some pharmeceutical grade morphine in order to cope.

The worst thing is that it is a monopoly organisation that has the control of the postal service and communications!

Damn, just typing this is making me reach for the mogadon......

Regards

How strange, i often get packages from the usa, delivery time is always the same: 7 days, from which 2-3 days it spends in america and the rest is in Russia, but always not more than 7 days. From america it is sent by usps and in Russia i get it by EMS ( http://www.garantpost.ru/eng/ ) They always call me and ask the time when i'm home and can get the package. And first times when they didnt have my phone number, and tried to deliver my package, and no one was at home, they leave a notification of getting that package in my mail-box, with package's number and their phone, where i can call, and say when they can re-deliver my package, and that second delivery is free too.

Mountaingirl,
AlicefromMoscow reminded me I didn't mention who else. UPS/DHL/Fedex operate in Russia. The downside to their very efficient operation is that their costs are prohibitive for your average Russian. If memory serves, an A4 "letter" type envelope cost about $60-70 US from Krasnoyarsk to Oz and took 7 days to my door.

UPS have a very good website which gives prices/times/destinations for articles. I also visited my local DHL and the same type of package cost roughly the same amount (In $AUS) to send to Russia.

One thing though, be careful if trying to send stuff to an embassy. Some embassies will refuse to receipt goods sent via these companies.

On an interesting note re my previous post, today I received a package sent 27/06 sent by surface "pochta". Quite bizarre given I received a package sent mid August two weeks ago!!!!! Shocked

The options are as open as your wallet can stand...

Enjoy

Usualsuspect,
$60-70???? >choking sounds< Are you serious? I guess I would just rather send an e-mail. Shocked And bring whatever I wanted to give someone next time I visited. Very Happy
Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate it. I will definitly check out those websites you mentioned as well. Next time I will be sending it via a diffrent route.

Or you can use http://www.westpost.ru -- it's a private company and what they do is that they offer a PO Box for you on in a border town in Finland and their courier gets post every day to St. Petersburg, from where they personally take it to the rest of Russia. This way you get your post faster (as it's still EU) and then the couriers take care of it. Their fees are lower than that of courier companies, but you need to open an account with them ($10 / month) and provide an address in Russia to which the post arriving to your PO Box in Finland should follow.
