For the past year or so I've been listening almost exclusively to Russian music. It's really helping me w/learning the language because often Russian is spoken so quickly, and in the songs it's usually slow or at least slowER.

Quite awhile ago our close friends returned from a 1 month research job in Russia with some albums of Agata Kristi for me. I'm obsessed. I've never heard such evocative, melodic, emotional music. I am completely in love with it. My adoration of AK has led me to explore Russian music further, and I've found a few others that I really, really like -- Lyube, Kino, Piknik, Bi-2, DDT.

It's kind of difficult to find actual albums at stores in Saskatchewan (that's where I live) because there are no large cities here and few music stores at all, but they can be bought in bigger centres like Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton, etc. A lot of these groups offer average-quality MP3s of their music on their websites, which works in a pinch.

If you look, there is a Russian community in Saskatchewan. Also you can purchase high quality Russian MP3s online. If PM, Dmitri or Mediashark, I am sure that they can give you a link.

I also know someone in Saskatchewan who is desepartely trying to learn Russian. Maybe you two can help each other.

I've been using Allofmp3 for about a year and I /love/ it. It has everything I could ever want.

And please PM me re: your friend because I would really, really, really love to have a learning partner for Russian.

I thought American 70s music stunk.

What part of Saskatchewan are you from?
You know that U of Sask has an agreement with the University of SPB?

Ariya is an awesome metal band. The lyrics are great, but they make more sense in Russian.

let me share my opinion bout the best albums that came out in Russia here, personally I realy don't think there's much good russian music out there from amongst what russian people have to listen (((
But the least is still the best...
Varvara is awsome! Check out the last 2 albums
Avraam Russo is great. All of his Albums
Nikolay Noskov (ex Gorky Park) is ... wow! Check his last 2 albums Dyshu tishinoy & Po poyas v nebe
Polina Gagarina didn't even released an album but is God-blessed Author and Singer. Check out 2 of her single Kolybelnaya & Ya Tvoya
Among other talented folkes: Lazarev, Alyona Vysotskaya, Savitcheva, Murat Nasyrov, Moralniy CodexAnd others...
Chek out the past years hits Bravo band, for example...
That no all))

You can also visit www.russmus.net for some mp3s (although it's not an mp3 site of such) and lyrics to Russian songs, along with English translations.

The most popular bands (judging by the site's statistics) are Zveri, Zemfira, Ruki Vverh and Via Gra. The first two are pop-rockish, the last two are more techno-dance pop.
