I've been to Moscow before, but that was in the middle of summer - bustling, vibrant and beautiful. What's the city like in early January? Cold, obviously, but do the shops stay open, does everything still run? Also, can anyone recommend a good place to buy a coat in Britain that's not too expensive but that can withstand the Russian winter?
Thanks,
Mike |

In my opinion Moscow winters are rather mild, and don't require extremely heavy clothing for daily outings. Keep in mind I'm from central Canada, where we have Siberian winters. I believe that average Moscow daily temperatures in January are around -10C to -20C. Find a jacket with that temperature rating, dress in layers, have warm footwear, gloves, headwear (chapka, toque, etc.), and you should be fine. Oh, and the shops will be open. |

I told someone that I have lived NOrthern Canada and have been weather that is minus 60 C. Stated that Russian winters are nothing in comparison. I remember digging out my the side of my house and jumping in snow banks from a third storey building. WE used to grab the bumpers of slowing moving vehicles to take a trip to school. If you like good jacket for activitites like camping and such, try www.mec.ca. It is the best goods at reasonable price. You can get gortex jackets which are breathable.
I think there is a little Northern rivalry with all the northern countries about winter. |
Depends on where in Russia you look. There is a village Oymyakon in Siberia that had minus 72 C, thats a record, the lowest temperature on this continent. |
