First of all can I comend admin on a very helpful and informative site.

I am flying from Frankfurt to Rostov next week to visit a friend. Can someone please clarify for me the customs procedure on arrival, and for that matter departure.

i.e. what form do I fill out, where do I get it from?

What do I declare in terms of cash and valuables (digital cameras etc)

Do I have to keep receipts for all cash I spend?

And any other advice regards dos and don'ts...

Many thanks

E in F,
First thing to do before you leave is photocopy everything! Keep this separate somewhere. Next up, make sure your passport/visa/vouchers are all easily accessible and have a ballpoint pen handy as well. Once you've slid off the Tarmac into the terminal your first inspection will be Border/Immigration. I believe (I was given mine AFTER I went to register my visa) you'll now be given your white immigration card which is in English/Russian. Fill it out in painfull detail. Having been given the once over and to the sound of several stamps later....it's off you go for baggage where the Customs Forms should be. Again, they are in English/Russian. Fill this one out in detail as well.
What I do is declare half my cash, none of the credit cards and my spare "get out of jail dollars (Australian, that is..). I don't declare the camera or personal jewellery. I declare any prescription pills. You give this to the Customs official along with your passport etc and your bags may or may not be inspected. They stamp your Declaration. You must keep this. You are now free to stumble into Russia!. But if you don't register your Visa within 72 working hours.....you leave yourself open for nasty business....
If you exchange cash or travellers cheques at a bank or "Obmen Valyuti", keep the receipts.
Finally at departure time, the "exit" Customs declarations are generally in the main hall. Grab one and fill it out. Have the "entry" one, this one, your migration card, tickets and receipts ready to rock and roll. The first place you go is Customs. They should take your Declarations. They may also throw them in the bin, but that's their business. You can now go to check-in. From there it is back to Border/Immigration where you now present your passport and the white card......all things being equal, you can now kick back and wait for your plane's boarding call......Personally, I'd check in as early as humanly possible...but that's me....

A lot of the time it amounts to nothing but the day may come when one of these officials will want to see absolutely everything...

Enjoy

Why don't you declare the Cameras or Jewellery?

All the best!!

E in F,
Hmm. I usually don't because most Customs places I've been to in the world don't care about earrings/rings/necklaces etc. If I was bringing in something extremely valuable, I'd declare it. As for the camera, mine is an old model and isn't "new and shiny". Again, I've never had a bother because (maybe foolishly) I just assume that as a tourist, I should have a camera Very Happy
