Guys - could you help? Im currently studying Russian, and I'd like to start typing Russian on PC as well. What is needed to do this?

I've found various russian keyboard stickers at http://www.latkey.com, but I have no idea how I characters will start appearing after I apply them. Or is purchasing a keyboard for this matter is a better idea?

Please please, advise.
Also, any recommendations for a good _audio_ CD courses for Russian? (not academic ones, just to get to speak fast and possibly including accent reduction!) Embarassed

The keyboard stickers are great. In fact I plan on buying a set in the near future for my new Mac. If you purchase the transparent kind, they appear really nice on your keyboard. Smile

I hope this helps,

Zach

Do a search for BYKI ( before you know it ) also another easy start can be found here: http://www.alphadictionary.com/rusgrammar/
Try them and see what suits you.

The characters won't appear ater you apply the stickers Wink
You have to enable cyrillic in your regional settings. And then learn a whole new layout which is a pain.

A better solution is to use the keyboard you have and set up a little program that turns it into a phonetic Russian keyboard. You just toggle between en and ru on the language bar and for the most part the letters are in the same place. There are a few exeptions of course such as я ю ч ж but you will soon memorise these keys.

It takes about 15 minutes to setup and that's it. I have been using it for years and am completely lost if I have to type on a conventioal Russian keyboard.

Full instructions are at

Learn touch typing! Forget about using a pheonetic keyboard. Nobody in Russia uses that. And I find it easier to master than the QWERTY keyboard because of the more practical layout (most common letters on the home row).

If you have windowx XP you can have an on-screen keyboard in Russian when you choose your keyboard layout. Stickers work well too... but I don't like it when they come off now and then. I prefer to purchase a keyboard with the letters on them already.

Well to each their own. At least the guy is getting some options and can make up his own mind.

I touch type english and find it's pretty useful on the phonetic keyboard, just have to look now and then for those 7 or so letters. And no labels to come off! Laughing

Try The Rosetta Stone software. If you have sound, it's all pronounced and spelt in cyrillic. Seems OK.

As I understand it, the QWERTY keyboard was designed to be difficult. Early typwriters couldn't keep up with fast typers and would jam. The QWERTY keyboard solved this by making it nearly impossible to type fast.

I tried CDs from PImsleur. Go to google and type pimsleur Russian. But I think the best way to learn Russian is try to speak in Russian as much as possible with native Russian speakers. I am a native English speaker, but some how I find that Russian is more richer in English. It seems to have more vocabulary than in English. Does any one know the origin of Russian language. I believe Russian and German originated from ancient Indian language called Sanskrit. Indian official language Hindi also originated from Sanskrit.

...and also for sales purposes... salesmen could simply type the world "typewriter" on the top row to show off what they were selling... Cool lame, huh?

Guys - thanks a lot for tons of great advices!!!
I was actually thinking about touchtyping, however since I'm only learning the language, and don't know it yet that well, it proves to be quite difficult to write using another alphabet and not seeing it! Try it for say, Japanese! Smile

Phonetic keyboard is also a great idea, but I suppose, again it's good later on when you _already_ know and got used to a specific keyboard layout (which is not my case).

So for now, I've chosen to go ahead with the Russian keyboard stickers - but let me see how it goes once I receive them and install the driver.....

Learning Russian: RosettaStone seems to be quite expensive! $300 for a program. Is it really THAT good? Usual casettes / CDs are in a range of $50, and I don't think "pictures" in the RosettaStone make much imact to learning speed. Any success stories here from someone who has succeeded in using it Question

Got my keyboard stickers from Latkey, now I'm a happy Russian man! Yeeeehaaa!! Rolling Eyes (well, at least "russianized" if I can say that...) much easier than finding any Russian keyboard here. Now I'm fully able to say to all of you: ПРИВЕТ

Thanks a lot guys for the advice again, I hope once I learn a little (I'll probably go for rosetta stone as well) we will talk more on both languages. Embarassed

I downloaded some software or whatever that you could save under they keyboard options and then you had to delete the original cryllic keyboard setting. It's quite easy and most of the letters are on the same key as the latin sign is. It helped me a lot. I type in Russian much faster nowadays.
