I am an American and I am taking a trip to the Caribbean with my girlfriend who is from Russia. She will fly from Moscow to London and then make a connecting flight to the Caribbean.

I’ve been told that she will need a visa at the London airport. Is that true? If so, what kind of visa does she need and how does she obtain one?

Thanks.

Depends on which airport and terminal she arrives at, and which airport and terminal she leaves from. First of all it is bad news to change airports in London. During bad traffic times it can take 3 hours just for driving time.

But assuming that she is arriving and leaving from Heathrow, the problem is that there are 4 terminals and the 4th one is some distance from the other 3. We have relatively good (and improving) visa relations with Russia so we don't require a transit visa if you stay airside in the same terminal. But it is unclear what happens between terminals, especially if you go to/from terminal 4 which requires a short bus journey.

The safe thing to do is to apply for an airside transit visa. And if the journey involves changing airports, book her a hotel room near the departure airport and plan to spend the night. And she should apply for a Visitor in Transit visa. This is where it helps to use a travel agency that specialises in Russian travel.
