You may find it cheaper to book a ticket to London Heathrow and then rebook from there, I managed Calgary Moscow for $1240 cdn rtn, also check SAS via Seattle and Coppenhagen.

Any of the Aeroflot flights are usually cheaper, fly from Seattle or New York, you usually can get an add-on flight to St Petersburg for free.

I went a long way, but paid ~750 CAD total. Flew from Toronto->Amsterdam, then Amsterdam->Helsinki... took train to St P. On the way back did similar route, train to Helsinki, then Hel->Ams, then back to Toronto.
